An excellent story

This is the only Brenda Joyce book thus far that has made me cry.

I thought Violet Cooper was an endearing heroine. She never had opportunities for education and such, but when they were offered to her she didn't turn them down. Her goal throughout was to better herself. Some of the situations were implausible, yes, but isn't that why they call it fiction?

I was somewhat surprised by the ending although it was hinted at several times throughout the story.

I have enjoyed all of Brenda Joyce's books thus far, my favorite being "The Third Heiress," but I especially like the time and place of books like "The Finer Things."

Sometimes I really hate reviewing books. I may not care for the book the 1st time I read it: Then years on I read it again and like it Or the other way around. First time I liked it: 2nd time I found the storyline slow.

Rags To Riches Romance

Brenda Joyce redoes the always fun Pygmalion tale in her newest novel THE FINER THINGS.

Violette Cooper is a child of the streets. Abandoned by her drug addicted Father, she struggles, stealing when necessary, in order to survive. She wants so much more out of life than what fate has handed her. When Sir Thomas, a kindly old Knight, offers her his hand in marriage she sees it as an opportunity to better herself and agrees to become his wife.

Sir Thomas introduces her to his friends', the Harding family, who immediately become enamored by the mix of beauty and innocence she presents and aren't offended by her heavy Cockney accent and her social faux pas. Violette finds herself drawn to the younger, handsome Harding son, Blake, but will not do anything to hurt her good-hearted husband/savior.

When Thomas dies and his hateful daughter begins to throw around accusations that Violette may have murdered him Blake feels compelled to help the innocent beauty. She falls in love with Blake and comes to the realization that he will never reciprocate her feelings unless she becomes a real Lady so she decides to take some lessons and succeeds in transforming herself. Unfortunately, no amount of lessons are going to soften Blake's hardened heart. Eight years earlier the love of his life shattered his dreams and he's made a vow that he will never open his heart again. Besides this little obstacle there are many other things conspiring to keep these two apart: murder charges, stubbornness, miscommunication, insecurity, another suitor, a tragic accident involving a family member and some more miscommunication.

Readers will admire the way Violette struggles to pull herself up out of the dregs of society and become a real Lady but may tire of some of the choices she makes and the lack of communication between this couple. The hero is sweetly protective of the heroine and a man devoted to his family but he has one heck of time admitting to his feelings when it comes to matters of the heart. The sexual tension and love scenes are tamer than the previous Joyce book I've read so readers looking for a sweeter story will not be disappointed with this gut-wrenching and tear-jerking read

A good article, a bad book

If you're like me, you were recommended this book by Tai Lopez. If that's the case, why are you reading reviews? (I.e., don't listen to just anyone.)

This "book" isn't actually a book. It's a reprinting of an article published in Harvard Business Review January 2005, which I realized I had laying around the house! I read that first, then when I opened this book was rather shocked to realize it was an exact reprint stretched from 10 magazine pages to 50 in 24+ pt font size.

Frankly, this book isn't a book by the standards you probably have. As other reviewers have lamented, Drucker mentions something important then just moves on, giving no steps on how to go about figuring it out. What you get is a barebones explication of managing oneself, and it has a few good insights. The semantic point aside---that it shouldn't be called a book---you will probably learn a few pointers about managing oneself. But you will be greatly disappointed if you expect there to be much more than an outline of what you should do in general.

Here's what it covers:
What are my strengths?
How do I perform?
What are my values?
Where do I belong?
What should I contribute?
Responsibility for relationships
The second half of your life

You'll notice that they are mostly questions. The article really seems to just be a (guided) impetus to think about certain important things in your life. The shortness of the book is really a reflection that YOU have to do the work of figuring out the answers.

A book you give to the whole family or office

Managing Oneself is a short, sweet and straight to the point pamphlet. Per the title, It discusses how one should know their strengths and capitalize on it. One very useful piece of advice Peter Drucker offers is understanding how you learn. Are you a reader or are you a an active listener? He goes on to explain how you can be successful in any endeavor if you simply know how you learn. Drucker gives examples of past presidents that failed woth reporters because they were listening to a set of questions when they should have been reading them beforehand. This was my first Harvard Business Review book and I will definitely purchase more works by them. All in all, very good read and a book you will give to your inner circle.

A Wakeup Call from Drucker

This is a good preliminary version of Drucker'a Chapter 6 of his 1999 book Management Challenges for the 21st Century. Although I prefer the final chapter version better, this article includes most of his reflective lifelong insights on the need to proactively learn about yourself enough to create an effective plan for the rest of your life. Drucker wisely identifies key areas of individual responsibility and control that need consideration and action. This is a good reminder of how we all need to honestly look at ourselves in the mirror. Given that these thoughts were prepared just a few years before the end of his life, his suggestions have even greater value and meaning. A must read at least once in your life.

"Duel to the Death with the Vulture! New York City is being terrorized by a new criminal called the Vulture. As he flies out over the city, he is spotted by Spider-Man, who is equipped with a miniature camera once owned by his late Uncle Ben. Spider-Man manages to take some photographs of the Vulture, but the Vulture sees him, attacks him from behind, knocks him out, and dumps him into a water tank. After breaking out of the water tank, Spider-Man heads home, where he adds some improvements to his devices and develops his photographs. The next day, Peter Parker arrives at J. Jonah Jameson's office with pictures of the Vulture. The publisher is very impressed and pays him well. Then Peter heads for the Park Avenue Diamond Exchange, which the Vulture tauntingly announced to the public as the site of his next robbery. While everybody expects the Vulture to strike from above, he strikes from beneath a manhole cover, seizes a case of diamonds, and flees through the New York City sewer system. Spider-Man uses his Spider-Sense to track him down, and wins their battle with an anti-magnetic inverter, a device he built to counteract the magnetic power that the Vulture uses for flight. The Vulture is left for the police, and Peter Parker has photographs of the Vulture's capture, which he sells to J. Jonah Jameson for a large sum of money. Peter and Aunt May are able to make ends meet.
