About the Author
Katherine Kurtz has been writing fantasy novels for well over three decades. She is married and until last year made her home in Ireland, in a mildly haunted gothic revival house called Holybrooke Hall. Slightly dated but still enjoyable launching book for the Deryni universe.

This book was the first one Kurtz wrote nearly 40 years ago, and there are moments when the book does reflect that. There is usage of "magical" terminology and actions (like poetic spells) that aren't used in her subsequently written books.

Plot: The young heir to the kingdom of Gwynedd (an alternate universe equivalent to Britain, essentially), Prince Kelson, watches helplessly as his father dies of an apparent heart attack during a hunting expedition. In short order a rival heir to Kelson's throne (from a usurping dynasty who'd ruled Gwynedd centuries earlier) threatens his life and those of the rest of his family, the Church (and Kelson's mother) want his father's best friend killed because of his magical heritage, and Kelson comes to realize some surprising things about his own heritage.

This book and its two sequels in this trilogy (Deryni Checkmate and Deryni Rising) were both re-released a few years ago with some minor edits and plot adjustments to reflect later-written books.

25 years later... still a strong (if imperfect) novel!

You know the experience of going back to something you loved as an adolescent and discovering it to be completely execrable garbage?

Fortunately, that's not the case with Deryni Rising.

It's not without flaws, however. One reviewer gives it a one star review for the absolute good / absolute evil characters, and I can't dispute the criticism. Nuance of motive is not, at least in this first volume, in Kurtz' repertoire.

In fact, breaking things down stylistically, there is a lot to be disappointed in with this novel, so it is a testament to the power of her narrative that it is, in fact, a real page turner.

Kelson Haldane's father, the King, is killed in the prologue, and the subsequent novel covers the days to Kelson's coronation. Surrounded by treachery, ignorance, and general political scheming, there's a lot that can go wrong. It doesn't help that Kelson's most trusted advisor, Alaric Morgan, is a half-breed member of an almost-outlawed race with magic powers, and that virtually everyone is working on Morgan's downfall. This includes Kelson's mother, who is the most viciously anti-Deryni activist in the book. And, of course there is a usurper in the wings, herself a full Deryni sorceress, sowing discord and preparing for the restoration of a Deryni evil empire.

Reading this you can see influences into both Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.

Kurtz' style improves over the course of subsequent books: this is not just a first novel, it is a first novel sold-before-written, dashed off in a time when the bar for quality fiction in fantasy was non-existent.

Some things to gloss over: one dimensional characters. Frustrating and willful ignorance. Characters consistently jumping to untenable conclusions. Deus ex Machina solutions. Over-the-top descriptions (everyone is apparently astoundingly good looking in this world).

Some things to notice: great descriptions of ecclesiastical protocol. Beautiful descriptions of clothing. Gradual revelation of deeper mystery.

And yet, it is immensely readable. Gripping. Fun. And sets the stage very well for the books that follow.

A Classic from the 70s that doesn't hold up

Kurtz' Deryni novels were considered top notch when they were written in the 70s, but they haven't aged well. The characters are thinly drawn and rely heavily on stereotypes, with motives thinly sketched, and character development, such as it is, told rather than shown. The main characters never truly seem to be in danger, because every time they are, one of them suddenly manifests new magical abilities that save the day. Even the climactic duel at the end is resolved with this sort of deus ex machina device. It's her first novel, and it shows.

Kurtz claims to have done graduate work in history, but wouldn't know it from the novel. Ostensibly set in a high medieval society, the world is actually a pastiche of generic fantasy Europe with details drawn from as late as the 20th century (such as overstuffed chairs and crystal decanters). Details like that were acceptable when fantasy literature was still maturing, but today it reads like second-rate young adult literature.

Who would have thought a book could be so useful AND fun to read?

First let me say that I read several technical books a month, and have reviewed them for Manning Publications on several occasions. So I have some pretty high standards that must be met before I give a book five stars.
I am teaching myself PowerPivot for work, and have Microsoft® PowerPivot for Excel® 2010: Give Your Data Meaning which is very thorough, but this book is more helpful. It focuses most on what I know least about--Data Analysis eXpressions, or DAX. It begins with the assumption that the reader is an Excel power user, or "Excel Pro" as the author calls us. It therefore gets right into the material related to PowerPivot, without wasting time or space on things everyone who uses Excel professionally already knows.
The author's writing style is entertaining, turning what could be a very dry topic into something you want to celebrate along with the writer. I love his side remarks, such as: "You will not see me create another implicit measure in this book. They are dead to me."
My only complaint is a formatting one. Much of the text is in a green font that shows as a much lighter gray on the regular Kindle, making it hard to read. Even on the Fire I would have preferred a choice with more contrast.
Despite that little annoyance, the book is a fast, enjoyable read with the information presented effectively and in an order that makes perfect sense to an Excel Pro. I am tempted to go ahead and buy a print copy just to have as a reference for my team, it is that good.

Excellent Book for Excel/PowerPivot Users

I'm a self-taught expert at Excel. I've been using the software for almost 25 years now. I also been creating and using Pivot Tables for the past 10 years, but despite my long experience with the subject, I certainly had some gaps due to my learning style.

Rob Collie's book not only fill in the gaps, it provides a solid foundation upon which you can confidently upgrade from Expert to Master.

I have never come across a technical book that delves deeply into a somewhat complex subject with such an easy to follow and funny style. You will hardly feel the need to read the same chapter again. Once you read it, you are ready to move on to next with a very clear understanding.

This book deserves 6 stars out of 5, and I highly recommend it for Excel/PowerPivot users

provides the superpower to make you a superhero in the office

I have owned this book from day one. As soon as it came in, I dived right in and read it. Having already have been a PowerPivot user from it first days of release, I actually thought I had a fair amount of knowledge .

How wrong I was..

This is a book I just keep turning too time and time again. And, for as many times that I have referred to it, i have recommended it to coworkers who have purchased as well.

Rob's practical style of teaching by use building blocks and comedy make this a MUST read for anyone who has been using PowerPivot or has heard of its "special powers".

One for certain reality is something that Rob mentions many times in the book. It's this: PowerPivot will make you more valuable . It will make you the superhero among your coworkers and employer when it comes to insights about your business. This is something I said to myself the the first time I saw PowerPivot at a Microsoft conference several year ago.

I have all 3 books that make up this series.. All are just awesome, but this is the foundation..

A must buy.... A must investment in your career...

Microbes are no fun!

I read this book two years ago and thought it was a great read. I just finished reading it again and have to say that I liked it even more the second time around. I should warn you however, that if you're looking for lighthearted summer reading that'll lull you into complacency and make you feel all warm and fuzzy about the world- stick to Oprah's book list. The only warm fuzzies you'll find in this very informative and well-written book are the microbes and viruses that make up the subject matter.
Laurie Garrett has done a masterful job of chronicling the spread of infectious diseases over the last 50 years. The book is divided into sections that give the history of the rise (and in one or two cases- the fall) of the major pandemics of this century. The chapter on AIDS is worth the price of the book alone and should be required reading for political science students. It's the perfect case study on how apathy, intolerance, ignorance and political infighting foster the spread of infectious diseases.
The underlying message of The Coming Plague is that we are at war with oodles and oodles of really small things whose survival instincts are much better than ours. In short- we're losing! These pernicious little buggers seem to be able to adapt much quicker than we can find new ways to kill them.
The Coming Plague reads like a detective story. And Garrett does a fine job of making it human and personal by giving us a peek into the lives of the scientists who are heading up the fight to solve the mysteries -and the victims who suffer from them.

Epidemiologists were my heroes

When I started this book years ago in the dead tree edition (and did not finish, due to its heft), I was stunned and overwhelmed by the stories which Garrett told about epidemiologists out in the field. The diseases were incredibly scary, and so the risks that these scientists exposed themselves to in order to save a small village, a hamlet, potentially a nation or continent... We're talking about people who want to better the world, and are willing to put their lives on the line to do so. I think my reading was before 9-11, when US society refocused its definition of hero onto first responders, SEALS, Ground Zero workers etc. But the heroism of these epidemiologists still needs to be noted: when you're out in the field and catch some incredibly contagious disease, they don't send you an airplane ticket to get home: they send a lunar landing module with airtight locks, put you and your module on a military transport, and get you to some place with sufficient sophistication to get you well and then home. Not only are you at risk of dying... But you have an invaluable skill set and can't be easily replaced.

These kinds of stories are in Garrett's book. But there are also others which will make you slap your head in astonishment. Like the CDC scientist who goes to County Cork to see if the retired nuns might have traces of a virus from the Ivory Coast when they were missionaries in the 1940's. And then CATCHES that virus after kissing the Blarney Stone right after one of the nuns.

The book is astonishing, wonderful, thought provoking. And now that it's on Kindle I can finish it, no longer burdened by its heft. Really looking forward to it.

A fact filled book about a very likely major problem.

This is a long book. It's pretty well written, but the main point sometimes is lost in the details. There are lots of quotable statistics, but they are packed into each chapter. If I were to highlight each important or quotable passage, more of the text would be highlighted than not. The main point of the book is that we are pushing humans into contact with viruses that have the potential to be massively destructive. If this continues, we will have a pandemic of biblical proportions.
As a supervisor, I often have people bring me problems. I would have liked it if this book had clearly stated what should be done to avoid the coming plague.
