Soul, Body, and Survival: Essays on the Metaphysics of Human PersonsFrom Brand: Cornell University Press

How are soul and body related to one another? Are human beings immaterial souls, or complex physical organisms? Will we survive the death of our bodies? Does only the dualist view allow the possibility of life after death? This collection brings together cutting-edge research on the metaphysics of human nature and the possibility of post-mortem survival.Kevin Corcoran's collection, Soul, Body, and Survival, includes chapters from those who embrace traditional soul-body dualism, those who assert person-body identity, and those who propose entirely new views that fall outside the categories of monism and dualism. The first book to connect the metaphysics of persons with the belief in life after death, thus intersecting with theological as well as philosophical inquiry, it blurs the divide between metaphysics and the philosophy of mind.

Review
"This is an excellent collection of original articles with a very specific focus, namely western mind-body dualism and whether it is the view of survival contained in Christian scripture. . . . The book is well worth acquiring. There are many reasons to think that reductive materialism has completely failed in its efforts to get rid of subjectivity, qualia, free will, rationality and the rest of the basic furniture of folk psychology. Whether or not you think Conservative Christianity is a live option philosophically and theologically, its exponents are very much alive and dominate contemporary American philosophy of religion. Soul, Body and Survival is a valuable addition to my library, and I have put it alongside books suggesting process, disembodied soul and reincarnationist views of survival or advocating both western and non-western philosophical and religious views that there is no self to survive."―Frank B. Diley, University of Delaware, International Journal of Philosophy of Religion 52: 195-197, 2002

"Are human beings made up of two separate entities, the mind and the body, or are we a psychosomatic unity? Is there life after death? If so, what form does it take, and does it require human beings to be made up of two separate entities, one of which is left behind at death (the 'body') and the other which continues (the 'mind' or 'soul')? These are the questions which form the substance of this book."―Geoffrey Burn, Theology, July / August 2002

"Soul, Body, and Survival is a good collection that comes along at a propitious time, just when there is renewed interest in the topics it addresses. There are new models of resurrection afloat, greater efforts to make use of the latest work in metaphysics on personal identity, and more serious attempts to understand the Thomistic model. The authors in this book are among the most important contributors to these debates."―Dean W. Zimmerman, Syracuse University

A Gem in the Waste Land of Anthologies
By A. Customer
This anthology focuses upon a particular niche in metaphysics--the nature of human persons. The three sections of this anthology broadly focus around three issues: positive and negative arguments for dualism, alternatives to dualism, and whether or not life after death requires dualism. There are a total of fourteen essays, six for the first section, four a piece for the final two sections. Many of the authors are important `movers and shakers' in this area.

One of the nice things about this anthology is that most of the essays are relatively short. None are above twenty pages, and some are as short as twelve pages. This means that each essay does not endlessly sprawl on, and it is not too particularly taxing to finish in a sitting. Furthermore, all of the essays are interesting. I found several to be truly insightful (see, in particular, Olson's "A Compound of Two Substances"). There are many solid essays here, with only one (sadly) falling flat. Unlike some anthologies which contain dead in the water contributions, one could profit from a simple front to back reading of this text. The essays are not too terribly difficult. To be honest, this book would be a good (relatively) advanced introduction to the metaphysics of person. Most interested readers and undergraduates should be able to tackle any of the essays here. Furthermore, given the array of topics, the essays do not too narrowly focus on one particular issue and beat it to death. Most essays also have extensive footnotes so that one can easily see where to continue a study on the issues in that essay.

If there vices to this anthology, they are few. First, there is not a lot of interaction between the various authors. This is not to say that there are none, but most of the essays stand free from the rest. Second, several contributors--Foster, Hasker, Baker, and Cooper--provided concise and distilled introductions to their particular views... which they have espoused more extensively in books they have written. Thus, one not familiar with Foster's inductive argument for dualism will appreciate the introduction he provides here, but his essay does not seem to add anything he has not said already in his book. (For this reason, this book might not be as useful to one already familiar with the work of those philosophers.) But despite these relatively small qualms, I cannot but whole heartedly encourage the person interested in this area of philosophy to read through this anthology.

A Brief History of Everything, by Ken Wilber

A Brief History of Everything is an altogether friendly and accessible account of men and women's place in a universe of sex, soul, and spirit, written by an author of whom New York Times reporter Tony Schwartz says: "No one has described the path to wisdom better than Ken Wilber."

Wilber examines the course of evolution as the unfolding manifestation of Spirit, from matter to life to mind, including the higher stages of spiritual development where Spirit becomes conscious of itself. In each of these domains, there are recurring patterns, and by looking closely at them, we can learn much about the predicament of our world—and the direction we must take if "global transformation" is to become a reality.

Wilber offers a series of striking and original views on many topics of current interest and controversy, including the gender wars, modern liberation movements, multiculturalism, ecology and environmental ethics, and the conflict between this-worldly and otherworldly approaches to spirituality. The result is an extraordinary and exhilarating ride through the Kosmos in the company of one of the great thinkers of our time.

Review
"In the ambitiously titled A Brief History of Everything, Wilber continues his search for the primary patterns that manifest in all realms of existence. Like Hegel in the West and Aurobindo in the East, Wilber is a thinker in the grand systematic tradition, an intellectual adventurer concerned with nothing less than the whole course of evolution, life's ultimate trajectory—in a word, everything. . . . Combining spiritual sensitivity with enormous intellectual understanding and a style of elegance and clarity, A Brief History of Everything is a clarion call for seeing the world as a whole, much at odds with the depressing reductionism of trendy Foucault-derivative academic philosophy."— San Francisco Chronicle

Deeply important subject matter
By Aleatory
As the first book I've read by the author, I found the subject matter extremely fascinating, but the delivery somewhat repetitive. In an era that is profoundly stricken by the dissociative dichotomy that exists between the logical/rational and the emotional/intuitive, Wilber's willingness to embrace a more unified and holistic perspective is both revolutionary and desperately needed. In my initial readings, I was somewhat shocked to find that this book had been published at the outset of the 90s. It seems that its time has yet to fully bloom in the collective mind, but to me, makes the content all the more important now.

Overall, this left me feeling like I understood the gist of Wilber's Integral Theory well enough to go back to explore his many other publications or leave them be while I took the time to more deeply integrate what I had read. By this, I mean there's just enough explanation to make sense of things without feeling too lost (at least having some prior exposure to Eastern spirituality, philosophy, psychology, etc.).

A good overview of Integral philosophy
By Greg Skyles
This was a very readable, concise introduction to Ken Wilber's work. And amazingly, it is without footnotes/endnotes! I'd recommend it to the person who is wondering, "What is all that Integral stuff about, anyway?"
He illustrates a lot of his concepts with examples from history along the way which helps make this less of a dry academic treatise and more of an enjoyable read. I also liked that he explains the varying conflicts of different schools of science, religion, philosophy, politics, ecology, etc., very clearly and simply inside the Integral framework. This made a whole lot more sense than any history course I ever took.

A strong case for an integrated view that includes, but is not exclusively, scientific
By History and Science Craig
I wavered between four and five stars for this book. Wilber does an excellent job of presenting the case that there is more to the world than what science has/can find out. He maps "knowledge" into 4 quadrants, only one of which is really addressed by science. He does make some pejorative remarks about science in the early chapters that make him seem somewhat biased, but his overall treatment of the scientific world view if pretty fair (note that I am an engineer and science buff).

This book was fairly eye opening to me, and Wilber got me thinking about a lot of things I had not thought of before. I highly recommend this book to scientific/rational types as it will expand your thinking. In the end I only gave it four stars because if you have previous exposure to integral thinking it is probably not make as big an impact on you as it did on me.

Not one I would recommend.

Graysen and Emerson were neighbors until he moved away and left her heartbroken. Emerson seems to have a penchant for running away from anything that stresses her and continues to do so throughout this book. Graysen returns to town and attends Em's college graduation as a surprise. Both of their old feelings return to the surface and they decide to keep their affair a secret. This is where things started to go wrong for me. Graysen didn't have to lie to her about what was in Seattle, it was just plain stupid. Em's brother could have explained to her why he didn't want them together, but he didn't. Em acted like a spoiled, rich brat during this whole book. Want to take a year off - do it. Want to buy something - spend mommy and daddy's money without thought or care. Want to go along with a "friends with benefits" thing with Graysen - why not. When things go south - shut everyone out because that's the mature way of dealing with things for a college graduate. Wake up naked with a strange guy - sure. Drink to excess so you "can get your drunk on" just another fun day in the life of Emerson. When tragedy strikes - do you usual and take your "grand adventure" a year early even though I thought it was supposed to be during her year off which was several months in, but what do I know. The girl was just plain immature and didn't have a clue how to cope. Graysen wasn't much better and his downward spiral was just as painful to endure. Both of them threw each other away so many times I was unsure if this was supposed to be a love story. Parts of the book didn't make sense and there was even the end of one POV from Graysen that was then contradicted in the very next chapter from Emerson's POV. This book was loaded with grammar errors and misused words. It is "shake" your head not "shack" your head. This was misused so many times throughout the book that it made my head hurt. There were many more wrong words used and it took away from the book. I don't know who proofread this, but that person needs to be removed from it in the future.

Skimmed the end and will be deleting. Too bad because I love this type of storyline. At the end of the book with about 5 pages remaining , the hero is still engaged to ow and the h tells him she loves him and knows he loves ow. She then accuses the ow of underhanded tactics of keeping him away from her. He does not believe her. The ow would not do that. Sample of the author's writing below.

SPOILER ***************************************************************************************

Hero

"Emerson. Don't say anything. Don't tell me. Why are you doing this to me? Can't you let me be happy with Ava, and you with Mark? Can't you just let us go?"

Heroine -

"...I just assume that Ava was the mastermind. But whatever. Because in the end, you will think what you want and you will do what you want. You made it clear that I am not the one you want. Although I know for sure you are the one I want, forever and always..."

Hero -

"You're lying, Emerson. I don't believe that. I can't believe that." She staring at me with hurt in her eyes. She is hurting. "You want me so bad that you would be willing to come up with this scam to get me back? That is low, even for you."

Then the hero thinks...

"This isn't happening. Did Ava do that? You love Ava. Not Emerson. But Emerson is the one. You know it. Damn it. I am having a battle with my own demons. I look at the clock and see that it is a little after ten and I am drained. I decide to call it a night and hope tomorrow I can get a few more answers."

Hero decides to call ow and confront her with h's accusations. She admits to it. He breaks up with her over the phone and tells her to leave the ring because he bought it for the heroine. He goes to see the heroine. She forgives him in a single paragraph.

"No regrets, right?" She nods, clueless. "And no fear?" Another nod. "Here it goes. You were right, Emerson. I love you. And I want to shout it. Ava did do it...What do you say, Em? Want to be my forever and always?"

She nods as she slings her arms around my neck.

"I love you, Graysen."

The end

I read the ENTIRE book
By Brwneyedgurll
I read a few of the reviews about this book. I don't really understand how you can review a book you haven't READ.
But... that's my opinion.

I loved this story, the only thing I would change (if I could) would be it wouldn't have ended where it did. It left me wanting more. So much so, that I contacted the author to let her know.
I loved the characters, I hated the characters, and I loved them all over again. Anyone with brothers (and his hot as hell best friend you couldn't have) will get this story.
I laughed , I cried, I smiled but most of all I got it.
I'd recommend this story (and have to my book loving friends).
I still want more !!!!!

Review
Erickson and Murphy have done something very important. They have shown that a discipline dominated by fragmenting tendencies has a coherent historical core that helps make sense of the fragmentation. Highly recommended. (Robert Borofsky, Hawaii Pacific University)The latest edition adds insightful discussions of important contemporary questions and concerns of the twenty-first century, putting anthropology out into the world of action and activism as well as academia. Further, this text provides rich support for students in the form of discussion questions, detailed glossary, and extensive lists of suggested resources. While most "history of anthropology" books tend to be either too biographical or too theoretical, Erickson and Murphy find just the right balance for students of anthropology. (Barbara E. Erickson, California State University, Fullerton)

Excellent Survey
By krebsman
I’ve only had an introductory class in anthropology, but I now find myself involved in a project that requires some anthropological knowledge. I’ve read a few works by Durkheim, Mauss, and Levi-Strauss, but I really needed a context for them and for the other works I’ll have to read. That’s where this book is great. It gives a survey of the whole anthropological field in chronological order, showing how one school of thought derived from, or arose in opposition to, another. The cause-and-effect is very logical. What impressed me about the book was its objectivity. I never felt that the authors were lobbying for a particular point of view. Nor was I aware that I was reading a book that had another agenda behind it. This book is well-organized and clearly written, introducing the basic ideas of all the major thinkers in modern Euro-American anthropology. There is also an excellent glossary of terms, a list of discussion topics, and a very valuable bibliography of suggested further reading. I’m sure I’ll be referring to this book often. It’s an excellent reference book. Five stars.

Great text for anthropology students
By Kristine
This text was used in an undergraduate History and Theory of Anthropology course. Of the texts used in the course, this was by far my favorite. It is fairly short, and the writing is clear and concise. It provides a history of anthropology, key individuals, and theoretical movements.

Reading this book was great preparation for studying more deeply the theoretical movements in anthropology. Key terms are bolded and provide succinct definitions. These are listed on the left- or right-hand sides when reading, and they are also found in the glossary in the back. Review questions can help students ensure they understood the necessary information. Particularly helpful is the timeline in the beginning, which certainly helped me keep track of the various shifts in anthropological thought.

I would highly recommend this text to anyone studying anthropology!

Excellent Text
By Katherine Lacy
I got this book as a companion to a graduate level course in anthropological theory. It is a clear and intuitive tour of the history of anthropology and anthropological theory. I appreciate the succinct definitions in the glossary, so I can flip back whenever I need a reminder of what functionalism/structuralism/configurationalism/materialism means...

The authors include the historical contexts that influenced theoretical developments in anthropology, describe the work of individuals in the context of that history, and insightfully explain controversies and disputes. I wish this had been the official textbook for my class but I will settle for using as a companion text for the more opaque readings in the course.

Women of Power: Half a Century of Female Presidents and Prime Ministers Worldwide, by Torild Skard

At a time when a woman—Angela Merkel—is arguably the most powerful leader in Europe and another—Hilary Clinton—continues to be at the center of the US political stage, it seems that women have broken through the glass ceiling and begun to populate the highest offices of the political world. Women of Power is a testament to that accomplishment, offering the most comprehensive overview of female presidents and prime ministers to date. Looking at over fifty countries and over seventy women leaders since 1960, Torild Skard—herself an experienced politician—examines how and why these women rose to the top and what their leadership has meant for women’s empowerment throughout the latter half of the twentieth century.

Skard examines the achievements and life stories of the world’s female leaders up to the current era. She offers nuanced portraits that draw on a number of materials, including many interviews that she conducted herself. All of the women discussed are organized by both chronology and geography, and Skard includes a number of helpful chapters that provide an overview and assessment of how different women leaders have come to power in different regions. Overall the book provides a fascinating account of women’s empowerment as it has manifested itself at the very top of the political hierarchy.

Review
“Let’s hope that all the women world leaders of the next 50 years cannot be contained within one volume!” (Drude Dahlerup Stockholm University)

“Offers a unique overview of the first half-century in history when women in positions of leadership were no longer the exception.” (Vaira Vike-Freiberga President of Latvia 1999-2007)

“When, where, and how do women become prime ministers or presidents? Women of Power is a tour de force, providing new insight into regional patterns of global change.” (Marian Sawer Australian National University)

"It is important that we learn lessons from those who went before." (Mary Robinson President of Ireland 1990-1997)

“A compelling major work on powerful women in international politics in our time. . . . Recommended as a comprehensive and exciting work in global women’s studies during the last fifty years.” (yvind Foss Academy of Sciences and University of Stavanger, Norway)

“This fascinating book on women of power is the first comprehensive overview of how and why women made it to the top of political leadership in the years after World War II until 2010.” (Norwegian Association for Women’s Rights)

“Women of Power is a valuable resource to those who seek an insight into the struggle women have faced in becoming leaders in their own right. Alongside the life histories of the women in question, Skard offers detailed analyses of political developments and gives brief historical overviews of each region at the beginning of each chapter. . . . A highly informative, knowledgeable, and valuable contribution to the fields of gender studies and political history.” (LSE Review of Books)

“The essential reference on women in power, covering a half-century of women at the political helm of democracies as both presidents and prime ministers. A self-described ‘third-generation feminist,’ Skard brings solid credentials to this mammoth project: she is or has been a scholar, a member of the Norwegian Parliament, UNESCO director for the status of women, and a minister in Norway's cabinet. Skard asks excellent analytic questions about why and how women ascended to top leadership positions and what effect their leadership has on societies. . . . This book belongs in the reference section of all research libraries. Highly recommended.” (K. Staudt, University of Texas at El Paso Choice)

“Skard takes on an enormously ambitious project in her recent book. She seeks out to examine the achievements and life stories of nearly the universe of the world's female political leaders from the 1960s up to the current era. Organized both chronologically and geographically, Skard includes over 70 leaders in 50 countries, and uncovers a variety of paths to power, regional patterns and variation, and fascinating individual stories.” (Heath Brown New Books in Political Science)

“An excellent academic source for both students of gender studies and international relations. It is also an interesting read for those either considering or analyzing careers of female politicians.” (Croatian International Relations Review)

Powerful book about women presidents and prime ministers worldwide
By Amazon Customer
Perhaps the only, and probably the best and most thorough, book about women prime ministers and presidents since 1960 around the world. Torild Skard has a rich background in feminist issues, politics, UN organizations, and academia to support her research. This is a must-read for anyone interested in how women either follow the men who have led their countries, or branch out in different ways.

What Doctors Don't Get to Study in Medical School, by B. M. Hegde

This book provides part of the important and formative reading a medical student must do outside the prescribed requirements for a degree, and is also equally valuable to qualified practitioners and medical professionals. Here, laid out clearly and concisely, are all the well-established potholes and pitfalls in current medical thinking and practice. It is a thought provoking challenge to modern medical practice and research and is intended to encourage us to consider the way medicine is taught. Modern medical practices are driven by science, technology and consumerism, with the cost of treatment weighted in favour of the doctor rather than to the benefit of the patient. Dr Hegde confronts the issue, and proposes an alternative humanistic attitude to education and treatment. Drawing on a huge range of resources from Sanskrit texts, Green and European philosophers, ancient and modern healers, to the most up to date Western research and publications – he has written a book that is both scholarly yet easy to read, a polemic against and an appreciate of the art and practice of medicine, and which will appeal to everyone involved in medicine whether students, practitioners or patients.

Means of Ascent (The Years of Lyndon Johnson), by Robert A. Caro

Robert A. Caro's life of Lyndon Johnson, which began with the greatly acclaimed The Path to Power, also winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, continues -- one of the richest, most intensive and most revealing examinations ever undertaken of an American President. In Means of Ascent the Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer/historian, chronicler also of Robert Moses in The Power Broker, carries Johnson through his service in World War II and the foundation of his long-concealed fortune and the facts behind the myths he created about it. But the explosive heart of the book is Caro's revelation of the true story of the fiercely contested 1948 senatorial election, for forty years shrouded in rumor, which Johnson had to win or face certain political death, and which he did win -- by "the 87 votes that changed history." Caro makes us witness to a momentous turning point in American politics: the tragic last stand of the old politics versus the new -- the politics of issue versus the politics of image, mass manipulation, money and electronic dazzle.

Amazon.com Review
The second installment in a projected four-volume biography of LBJ that opened with The Path to Power, Means of Ascent shines a harsh light on the early political years of one of America's most paradoxical presidents. The man who would later ram civil rights legislation through a reluctant Congress, and then be brought down by Vietnam, came out of a political swamp--Caro gives a graphic picture of the Texas democratic political machine at its most corrupt. The climax of the book is LBJ's election to the Senate in 1948, an election he won by 87 dubious votes out of almost a million. That vote arguably changed history. This book won the 1990 National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography.

Review
"Thrilling. Caro burns into the reader's imagination the story of the [1948 Senate] election. Never has it been told so dramatically, with breathtaking detail piled on incredible development . . . In The Path to Power, Volume I of his monumental biography, Robert A. Caro ignited a blowtorch whose bright flame illuminated Johnson's early career. In Means of Ascent he intensifies the flame to a brilliant blue point." --Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, New York Times

"Brilliant. No brief review does justice to the drama of the story Caro is telling, which is nothing less than how present-day politics was born." --Henry F. Graff, Professor of History, Columbia University

"Riveting . . . Explosive . . . Readers are in for a white-knuckle, hair-raising tale that could have ended in any of a dozen ways, with L.B.J. in the White House the longest shot of all. This is good history. Caro's treatment achieves poetic intensity." --Paul Gray, Time

"Caro has a unique place among American political biographers. He has become, in many ways, the standard by which his fellows are measured. Caro's diligence [and] ambition are phenomenal . . . A remarkable story . . . Epic." --Mark Feeney, Boston Sunday Globe

"Immensely engaging . . . Caro is an indefatigable investigative reporter and a skillful historian who can make the most abstract material come vibrantly to life. [He has a] marvelous ability to tell a story . . . His analysis of how power is used---to build highways and dams, to win elections, to get rich---is masterly." --Ronald Steel, New York Times Book Review

"Caro has changed the art of political biography." --Nicholas von Hoffman

"A spellbinding, hypnotic journey into the political life and times of Lyndon Johnson. Riveting drama." --Jim Finley, Los Angeles Times

"The most compelling study of American political power and corruption since Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men.... It is nothing less than a political epic, the definitive account of a watershed election, rich with all of the intrigue and drama that have become the stuff of legend. [It has] the suspense of a political thriller." --Steve Neal, Fort Worth Star Telegram

"Magnificent . . . Thunder and lightning rip through Mr. Caro's viscerally compelling work."  --Thomas W. Hazlett, The Wall Street Journal

"His research is dazzlingly exhaustive, his gripping story is enhanced by excellent writing, and his findings [seem] largely irrefutable. No one has done a better job of researching [the 1948 race] than Mr. Caro. He has produced a portrait not only of Lyndon Johnson, but also of the politics and values of mid-century America." --Philip Seib, Dallas Morning News

"Robert Caro gives us an LBJ who was human and then some, and what's enthralling is how this lucid, fascinating book keeps forcing us to confront the extreme contradictions of what (on good days) we call human nature. It's a testament to Robert Caro's skill that we find it so difficult to get a firm moral fix on Johnson. Caro is that rare biographer who seems intrigued by his subject but happily free from the urge to either heroicize, psychologize—or excoriate and punish." --Francine Prose, 7 Days

"Means of Ascent is a political biography, a detective story, a western and a character study. Above all, it is a richly textured, multilayered chronicle of a fundamental social and political change and how this change highlighted elements of Mr. Johnson's character: his powerful needs, tremendous ambition and particular genius." --Robert A. Kronley, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"One can trust every detail. The sagaciousness and discretion of Caro's investigations are obvious from the start. The story of that election has all the excitement of a murder mystery in which the culprit is known, but the question is whether justice will triumph. Caro tells it with the same thriller instinct as the old novelists, yet with the passion for accuracy of the most exacting detective." --Denis Wadley, Minneapolis/St. Paul Star Tribune

"A great book, and I believe the completed biography will be the great book about American politics in the twentieth century. The story of the '48 election is remarkable, unique. If it weren't a cliche, I'd say it has Tolstoyan epic grandeur." --Robert K. Massie

"Caro's writing summons a reviewer's cliches—gripping, compelling, absorbing, irresistible . . . unputdownable. The sentences sparkle. The details pile up in a mountain of evidence . . . Caro has at last set the record straight." --Richard Marius, Harvard Magazine

"A spellbinding political thriller . . . riveting." --Arthur Salm, San Diego Tribune

"Extraordinary and brilliant . . . Devastatingly persuasive . . . Caro's prodigious research, and his discovery of original sources ignored by other biographers, proves beyond doubt that much of what Johnson said about these years was false . . . The spadework combined with Caro's passion makes for drama more riveting than any novel." --Mark A. Gamin, Cleveland Plain Dealer

"We who are alive today are privileged to be present at the creation of what, when it is completed, may rank as the most riveting and disturbing American political biography of this century . . . Magnificently written." --Theodore M. O'Leary, Kansas City Star

"Caro is the premier biographer of our time." --Bernard D. Nossiter, The Progressive

"No one understands Lyndon Baines Johnson without reading Robert A. Caro." --James F. Vesely, Sacramento Union

LBJ wanders through the book like a monster in a horror movie
By Builderman
The book is extraordinary in its devotion to detail and the facts, no matter how unflattering to the subject they are. I recently moved to the Texas Hill Country and Caro's description of this place, the analysis of it's topography, climate and natural resources and how those shaped the culture of South Texas is masterful. LBJ wanders through the book like a monster in a horror movie, sometimes sympathetic, other times abhorrent, and always fascinating. I never liked Johnson and the only reason I bought the book was because I believed it would give me insight into the history of Texas. It achieves that in spades. Caro's prose is well-suited to the task and his voluminous knowledge of his subject and his times is always on display. This is truly one of the greatest biographies of an American president ever written and I highly recommend it. That said, I'm divided on whether I want to spend the time reading the other three volumes that complete the quarto. Maybe in the future.

If I were to criticize the book, it would be that its pace occasionally gets bogged down in needless detail when Caro dwells on secondary characters or themes that don't add much value to the story.

Jim McDermott, who ended up in prison when the national spotlight focused on the endemic corruption in Arkansas politics, said that the Clintons were "like tornadoes moving through people's lives." That also accurately describes Johnson and his impact on those who were devoted to him, as well as those who became his enemies. The force of his personality was monstrous.

Informative, Exhaustive Political History of LBJ from 1908 - 1941
By Elisa 20
This is a very good biography, with an amazing amount of research and detail integrated into the story of Lyndon Johnson up to his second run for the Senate in 1948. I particularly appreciated the description of the difficult, draining life for farmers in the Texas Hill Country. Of particular strength, for me, was the lengthy description of the hardships women (including Johnson's intellectual mother) faced in raising families and keeping the home without any running water or electricity. Beyond the lack of electric light, gas stoves, washing machines and dryers--conveniences that we all take so for granted now--even ironing clothes was arduous, not to mention lugging the gallons of water from the well to the house in order to take a weekly shower or wash clothing and dishes. Everyone living in America today should read those chapters because it is a great reminder that as overwhelmed as we can be by housework today, rural families in the years before Franklin Roosevelt had it much, much worse.

What impressed me most about this biography was Caro's ability to organize so much information, so much research and details about so many people into clear sentences, paragraphs and chapters. It is almost overwhelming to read it all and impossible to imagine it wasn't overwhelming to contemplate organizing it all into clear, readable prose. But Caro did, and there are even many times when his sentences go beyond "competent and informative" to sparkling and even brilliant prose.

He makes a compelling case for a Lyndon Johnson who is far from the fatherly figure he tried to achieve in his Oval Office addresses as the president who started--and stubbornly presided over--the Vietnam War. The child of a charismatic, idealistic father who descended from social status as a Texas legislator to a dirt-poor,failed cotton farmer, Caro's Johnson is convincing as an insecure boy who used every bit of intelligence, magnetism and personality in the service of his one goal: "to be somebody", in particular, to achieve the highest recognition from the public as President of the United States.

On this path to the White House, Caro introduces us to the Lyndon Johnson who had tremendous talent for making people like him (I would never have guessed, for example what a natural teacher he was--and a motivator among teachers as well, even when he was only in his teens. Caro left no doubt for me that he could have excelled in the classroom and easily reached the top administrative positions in education, if he had wished to have that career.)

But instead his single-minded ambition required political power--his own and others'--and it also required lots and lots of other people's money. Caro shows the hard work Johnson brought to any task he took on--campaigning for Texas congressmen and showing "political genius" in the process while only in his teens, becoming one of the most effective legislative assistants in congress, developing all of his political skills as a congressman and finally reaching the pinnacle of his career as a wheeling and dealing senator, doling out punishments and rewards--the latter, whether in committee appointments or cold, hard cash, since eventually he had access to millions thanks to his favors done for oil and construction interests from Halliburton (Brown & Root) to the oil men who knew that, Democrat or not, Johnson was their man in Congress. They paid him back generously for his favors.

This volume does not go as far as his successful run for the senate. Those 7 years are covered in "The Means of Assent" followed by "Master of the Senate", and "The Passage to Power", about his years as vice president. Caro's fifth volume (and it is hard to imagine there won't be a sixth needed to cover this period, 1963-1973) is still being written. The arc from Johnson's life in the Texas hills as a poor boy to the reviled multi-millionaire president who presided over the Vietnam War that killed over 58,000 Americans and over 2 million Vietnamese is an fascinating, if often dispiriting, story of megalomania and greed. To his credit, Caro does not skimp on the positive attributes Johnson had, but they fail to balance out the tragedy for the nation in the way that he used them.

I admire this book and certainly learned a lot from it, particularly about the workings of Washington poiticians from the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s. But when the admiration began to fade amid the wealth of minute political detail, I felt a little disappointed, almost cheated. Caro is so fixated on the political life of Lyndon Johnson--so much on the personalities in Washington at the time--that the "big picture" of life in the United States during the years of the 1920s through the 40's is often missing. He touched on Coolidge and Hoover's attitude toward the poor, but I would have liked to know more about the economic forces behind the Stock Market Crash in 1929 and more about the effects of the Depression. He mentions the opposition to labor unions in Congress--and the support for them by other politicians--but the labor movement itself gets little attention. Similarly, this is the period when World War began in Europe and also, two years later, when it began for the United States. Again, I wished for more of a "big picture" more global events, more social history, more economic forces. There is too much for me at any rate) of the battle between Roosevelt and John Garner (his VP). It goes on and on and on and that's true of so many things here, including Johnson's relationship with oil man and publisher Charles Marsh (and his affair with Marsh's mistress), his relationship with the Brown brothers (very important, but you know these are not the only wealthy patrons he has--where are the oil men who Johnson told Bobby Baker he was "working for" when he reached the Senate?)

The machinations of Johnson in purchasing a struggling radio station then and using his position to get special favor from the FCC is important because it shows a pattern of turning political power to personal financial advantage. But Caro sometimes belabors the point to an exhausting degree. If I want to know in detailed chapters about something from the 1940s, I would rather it is about the economics of the New Deal and how it was changing America, or how the U.S. was changing in response to the rise of fascism in Europe, instead of about the bitter feud between FDR and Garner, and how it involved Texan Sam Rayburn . I think these nearly 1000 pages could have included more of the "big picture", and instead painted much political minutiae with broader strokes in many cases (and also kept the focus more on Johnson--often Caro goes for pages with no mention at all of Johnson) AND could have cut many of the unremarkable details along the way to do it, and still been 200 pages shorter. Not to say it isn't a valuable biography of Johnson, but I wanted to make it clear why such a monumental work isn't getting the highest rating possible, despite being so well researched and well written.

Also, for those who want to learn more about what Lyndon Johnson was like from two men who worked for him, I recommend press secretary George Reedy's highly readable, "\\\Lyndon B. Johnson: A Memoir

A Larger than Life Book about a Larger than Life Man
By A Southern Reader
This book about the first years of LBJ's political life is nothing if not thorough. A lot of pages and a lot of interesting information about a man who while certainly flawed in many ways ended up doing a lot of good as President. Caro's research is exhaustive. In fact, maybe too much. I found myself skimming a bit when he repeated several times stories to illustrate a point. I bought the second volume when I bought this first volume, but don't plan to begin the second volume any time soon. A break is needed. That said, I do plan to continue the 4 volume series and certainly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys biographies in general, but political bios in particular.

The framework they have presented in this book is adaptable for numerous social-ecological contexts at multiple scales for people working together to create change in pursuit of sustainable development and promote well-being of people for today and for the future."--Robert B. Richardson, Ecological Economics

From the Back Cover

"If we are to make peace with nature, the effort will have to come from us all. This very moving book is the finest introduction to the subject I have seen. It does not avoid technicalities, but can be read with equal benefit by the young and the old with no prior knowledge of the complexities we face."--Sir Partha Dasgupta, Frank Ramsey Professor Emeritus of Economics, University of Cambridge

"Sustainability can seem like a faraway, nebulous dream. Through a clear framework, iconic case studies, and a beautiful, accessible style, Pursuing Sustainability brings this dream to life. A must-read for anyone concerned about the future health of our planet."--Gretchen C. Daily, cofounder of the Natural Capital Project and author of The Power of Trees

"Finally, a beautiful small book bringing together the thinking and practice behind sustainability science in an easily accessible and comprehensive manner, making it clear that this critical field of study for humanity provides an overarching framework for many different areas and competencies dealing with the sustainability challenge. Strongly recommended."--Carl Folke, founder of the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University, and director of the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

"This is a beautiful, lucid, and desperately needed book about the sustainability challenge. The authors accomplish a mission impossible: providing deep analyses of complex adaptive social-environmental systems while using simple terms and compelling metaphors to expose the crucial steps we need to take for long-term inclusive well-being. A must-read for practitioners and scholars alike."--Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, founder and director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research

"This excellent book provides an accessible framework for understanding sustainability, which is particularly timely as we reach a turning point in global efforts. Crucially, it emphasizes a holistic approach to address the interconnected nature of sustainability issues. Written to engage, inform, and provoke, it is simultaneously a call to think and act. It will find enduring appeal among students and researchers, casual readers and experts; I predict no collection on sustainability will be complete without this foundational work."--Arun Agrawal, School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan

Good intentions are not enough
By Charles Sieloff
I almost didn't buy this book when I saw it described as a textbook, but I had heard Prof. Matson speak several times on different subjects and knew that she had a way of making complex topics accessible and understandable to a general audience. This book helps bridge the gap between scientific research and practical application by using case studies to show how even the best ideas and the best intentions can fail to achieve results if the implementation does not learn from and adapt to the social, political, and economic context of the problem. There are no easy answers, which is why the book is about "pursuing" rather than attaining sustainability: "sustainability is not something to be achieved but is instead something to be worked toward!"

By John P. Weyant
This book is a major landmark in the quest to make the study of sustainability a foundational science. By allowing researchers to frame many of the world's most complicated and contentious environmental policy debates in a comprehensive and systematic way for the first time, it should transform those debates from being simply differences in opinion about what to do into science based discussions of what is best, why, and for whom.
