Coding Club books excellent for youth beginners

I am not a programmer but I wanted to get my kids and some friends started with an after school club, with me as teacher/facilitator. The Coding Club books were ideal. They're visually appealing and well organized. They offer challenges for those who can handle them, but also allow everyone to get the programs working.

I "taught" (guided) the kids through books 1 and 2. I found book 3 to be too complex for me to teach, and also better structured for the kids to engage on their own, working at their own pace. They love the game-style apps.

I recommend this series for 8-15 year olds beginning their exploration of programming.

I use it for an afterschool club and the kids like the simplicity of the examples. They are able to understand the concept all while having fun.

DOE step by step with examples

DOE is the set of process improvement tools for studying more than one factor in a single experiment. The 92 page book is straight forward with many examples to show the methodology for setting up 2, 3 and up to 31 factor experiments which according to the author will cover >90% of the DOE requirements.

The workbook is filled with case studies and examples from manufacturing problems which guide you through the process and help evaluate your understanding before moving to the next section. The mathematical/statistical equations are a bit intimidating but these can be set-up in a spreadsheet. The author says that these DOE tools can be used on office or sales processes but never gives an example of one.

The value in this book is if you are doing a quality or six sigma project. Also, it will be of value if you are working in industries like chemical or mining, where yields are the key to success. The book shows the equations to use, the eight steps for analysis and the logical steps to creating an experiment. Additionally, it includes an appendix with T (95% confidence level) and F (degree of freedom) values which are necessary references if you attempt to do this without a statistical software package.

excellent for first time application

I am conducting experiments with the the intent of optimizing output with 13+ control variables. I have an engineering degree, but we never covered design of experiments method. Prior to reading this book, I was attempting to guess theoretically what outcome I would expect, and then testing the theory. From experience, I knew the results wouldn't quite match up, so I was changing just one variable at a time - then it dawned on me there must be a better way. After some preliminary research, I realized the Plackett-Burman method was what I needed to apply. Most of the material I found too involved and would have required a great deal of time to process. This book had me understanding the method and its limitations after just a few days. It does not explain EVERYTHING - some information it just gives you and explains how to apply it. But that is the trade off to have a resource I was able to start producing meaningful results quickly. Some warnings: watch out for a few typos (especially in the formulas) - recommend doing all the examples to have a handle on the method. Definitely a beginners book for the statistically educated - it begs further research, but is an excellent start if you want to apply it quickly, but want to have SOME understanding as to how it works.

This book is headed in the right direction...

This is the second least complicated book I have ever read on DOE. Thanks Larry for writing the book! I wish that it had MANY more examples showing each DOE type he covers...Also, there is a need to FURTHER elaborate in simpler terms all of the concepts. I am still not understanding why a DOE book can't come out that isn't easy to read!

Recipient of the 2002 Pritzker Architectural Prize, Murcutt is noted as Australia's chief exponent of sustainable and site-sensitive buildings. Working alone, as the title suggests, he created an original Australian architecture, characterized by the quality of the outback landscape. His buildings have evolved from the work of Mies van der Rohe (e.g., Mies's Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology), as seen in structures dating from the Laurie Short House of 1973 to the more expressive Magney House of 1985. Written by architecture critics Haig Beck and Jackie Cooper and divided into three sections-theory, practice, and technique-the volume begins with a series of brief essays, including one by Murcutt himself, on the technical, material, and aesthetic aspects of the work; oddly, none of these essays acknowledges the architect's obvious debt in his early work to Mies. In the middle section, 23 designs, illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs, are presented with brief, sometimes overly promotional descriptions and more insightful analyses by the architect. In the final section, a series of highly informative sketches, drawings, and construction details documents each of the same designs. Complementing E.M. Farrelly's more concise but ultimately more satisfying Three Houses: Glenn Murcutt, this volume is recommended for larger architecture collections.

Murcutt: an Engineer's Perspective

This Review is not only an Engineer's perspective of Murcutt - it's also, in a way, a definitive statement that Murcutt has the perspective required of an Engineer.
As a marine engineer with a keen professional and personal involvement with architecture, I have grown to respect Glenn Murcutt deeply. This book expresses much of what could be said about him, about his work, his principles and his motivation.
I have been most impressed by the interpretation of Murcutt's architecture by the engineers associated with him, as well as the fruit borne in the lives of younger architects who have studied under his guidance, and have continued to co-labour with him in Australia today. If only it were so all over the world!
The influence of Murcutt in our day must surely rank with that of Aalto during the past century.
Inspired and highly recommended reading and study for all students of architecture, regional modernism and vernacular materials, as well as engineers with a passion for design.

Finally, A Good Murcutt Book

I have been into Murcutt's work for a few years now, but I have been disappointed by the lack of good books on his work. Until now, the best book around was Phaidon's '3 houses'. The only projects I have been able to see have been single family houses in the middle of the australian brush--so it was pretty cool to see this book with houses (or at least A house) in an urban area as well as larger commercial type buildings (like the education center).
As far as I know, all of his projects are shown in the book--built and unbuilt in great detail. The first 30 pages or so of the book is a collection of essays by both the authors and Murcutt. Then the book gets into his projects chronilogically--each with photographs, sketches and drawings.
The last part of the book is a collection of 'blue-print' drawings showing the plans and more importantly the construction details of all his buildings--all in pretty good detail showing dimensions and materials.
Im stingy with my book money--but I definately feel like I got my money's worth outta this one.

Best Introduction to Node and Express that I've Found

If you're pretty good at JavaScript, but maybe not quite as good at full stack development, this is your book. Seriously, stop looking, this is the one you want.

The best thing about "Express in Action" is that it takes a very step-by-step approach to a Node stack, starting with Node itself. It shows how to make a small, simple web app using just Node, then brings in Express with a minimum of modules, along with more excellent explanations.

This is important, because although the modular nature of Node and Express is a strength, it can also make things very confusing. A lot of online tutorials and even books throw a bunch of third-party modules into their code without really explaining how or why they work. Express in Action does not make that mistake. It goes into detail about how modules are incorporated, how Express's middleware stack works, etc.

Obviously, this isn't a book for those completely new to programming or web development. In order to get the value of it, you'll want to have at least an intermediate knowledge of JavaScript. Ideas like callbacks, JSON, APIs and closures should not be new to you, and it would help if you've worked with a library or two, such as jQuery. It might also help to have a little exposure to the back end, either through writing some basic apps with Node and Express or even through something like Ruby on Rails or .Net MVC. You don't have to be an expert, but if you have even a little bit of experience with how web apps work on the server side you'll find that this book makes a lot more sense.

This is the best introduction to Node and Express that I've seen, and I've been looking for some time. I 100% recommend this book.

Excellent express and node introduction

I'm fairly new to web development and only recently started writing server side javascript. I'm a student and purchased this book out of curiosity and to improve my overall web development knowledge.

This book was an excellent read, provided me with knowledge on topics outside express directly, and was enjoyable to read. I don't view this as a reference book and I suspect that professional web developers, who use express daily, may find this book to be a bit too inclusive of additional information beyond strict express examples. I feel this additional information and context makes the book appealing and accessible and don't think the express professional was the target audience anyway.

The greatest strength in this book, for me, was the breadth of the information provided -- I recommend viewing the "look inside" available on this amazon page to view the "brief contents" to see for yourself. At ~230 pages the book reads quickly (I easily finished and, more importantly, felt I understood the bulk of the information in only a couple days) and does not extensively cover every detail of the included topics. It does however provide a general overview, some relevant examples, and then information on where to find additional resources on the topics. I really appreciate this format.

The section on testing, when compared to the other sections, felt a bit weak to me. I don't view this as a negative as I felt it did a nice job of covering why this is important topic, but I can't say I fully grasped the examples as well as I did in the other sections.

get bored, and then move on

Very rarely am I actually able to finish a tech book. Usually I pull what I can out of it, get bored, and then move on. This book is the best intro to Express and Node hands down! The author has a great way of explaining things on a low level. My favorite part about his teaching is that he brings up a lot of the common vocabulary you will hear when developing express apps but he never just assumes you know it. Also if you thought you knew it he will most likely explain it so when that any confusion you had will be cleared.

I know this seems like a overly glowing review but I mean it. There are probably only 2 programming books that I have read that I have liked as much as this one. I hope Evan keeps writing books because I will buy them for life.

"The Fifth Agreement" is the sequel to "The Four Agreements," which outlines a simple foundation for a happy life that anyone can implement regardless of one's religion or lack of one. They convey the core of the Toltec shamanic tradition in a nutshell: Be impeccable with your word; don't take things personally; don't make assumptions; and do your best.

Don Miguel Ruiz wrote that bestseller 12 years ago, and now has written "The Fifth Agreement" with his son, don Jose. The fifth agreement is deceptively simple, yet incredibly profound. It states, "Be skeptical but learn to listen." While the first four agreements deal with our relationship to ourselves and how to create a happy life, the fifth agreement deals with our relationship to others, and how to create a better world.

"The Fifth Agreement" asks us to be skeptical and use discernment when listening others, and to understand that everyone has his or her own perspective and agenda reflected in their words. It is up to us to discern the truth behind the words, but always to be respectful of another's right to his or her views, even if we don't share them. Each of us is the artist of our own life, the director of our own play, and we can make it an adventure or a drama - heaven or hell, it's up to us.

The first part of the book reviews the first four agreements, discussing how the meanings we attribute to symbols define us culturally. The second part of the book delves into the more advanced concepts of the Toltec mystery school, including the Fifth Agreement, Victims, Warriors, Masters and Seers. All the concepts are explained in ways that anyone can understand and, hopefully, implement in one's life.

I had the opportunity to ask don Miguel in an interview for New Consciousness Review why he didn't include the fifth agreement in his first book. He said, "It wasn't the time." The fact that he decided that it is now the time, implies that we are finally ready as a society to learn to listen to each other and to respect our differences. Combined with the prescription for living joyfully offered by the Four Agreements, we really could have heaven on earth. This powerful little book shows the way, and makes it all sound possible.

Get it. Read it. Live it.

I just this minute finished reading don Miguel's new book, The Fifth Agreement, for the first time. It opens with a recap of the first four agreements, which is a little draggy if you've read The Four Agreements three times, but which is still worth reading because it is a reminder of the ramifications of the four agreements, and a chance to refocus on them in a new light. The fifth agreement, be skeptical, but learn to listen, is a stealth stunner.It seems simple and basic, but it's one of those that if carried to it's obvious conclusion, leads to complete freedom. In sum, it is a great book, a book to read, and reread, and read again. It is a book to practice and to live.
Don Miguel has a great knack for taking "keep it simple, stupid" to it's optimum.
Get it. Read it. Live it.

Fifth Agreement IS NOT anything like the Four Agreements

The Four Agreements is by far one of THE best books ever written. Four principles that make life enjoyable and rewarding. It is a MUST read.

The Fifth Agreement is very hard to read (rambling), way too time consuming and never gets the point across.

It should tell you something that he was able to convey the 4 principles in 160 pages but it took 228 pages to convey the fifth.

I give any book a 1 star that I couldnt finish..tried many times but when i found myself skimming the pages, I just gave up.

Save your time, money and just reread The Four Agreements.

About the Author
A prolific author and respected instructor, Alan Jefferis has taught drafting technology at Clackamas Community College, an Authorized AutoCAD Training Center, for more than 31 years. Prior to that, Mr. Jefferis taught for four years at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon. He brings a wealth of professional experience to his writing, including eight years of drafting for structural engineers and 35 years of residential designing. Mr. Jefferis is currently the principal owner of Residential Designs, a design firm specializing in custom, energy-efficient homes. He is a former Autodesk Developer Network member and a former member of the A.I.B.D. Mr. Jefferis obtained his B.S. degree from San Diego State University in 1972 and has authored or co-authored numerous textbooks on architectural drafting and design and effectively working with AutoCAD.

Madsen is an emeritus faculty member in drafting technology and the Autodesk Premier Training Center at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Oregon, where he also served as an instructor and department chairperson for nearly 30 years. In addition to his community college experience, David served as a drafting technology instructor at Centennial High School in Gresham, Oregon. He is a former member of the American Design and Drafting Association (ADDA) Board of Directors and was honored by the ADDA with Director Emeritus status at the annual conference in 2005. David is an Autodesk Authorized Author and has extensive experience in mechanical drafting, architectural design and drafting, and building construction. He holds a master of education degree in vocational administration and a bachelor of science degree in industrial education. He is the author of ENGINEERING DRAWING AND DESIGN, GEOMETRIC DIMENSIONING AND TOLERANCING, and PRINT READING FOR ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY, and coauthor of ARCHITECTURAL AUTOCAD; ARCHITECTURAL DESKTOP AND ITS APPLICATIONS; ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING AND DESIGN; ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING USING AUTOCAD; AUTOCAD AND ITS APPLICATIONS: BASICS, ADVANCED, AND COMPREHENSIVE; AUTOCAD ARCHITECTURE AND ITS APPLICATIONS; AUTOCAD ESSENTIALS; CIVIL DRAFTING TECHNOLOGY; and PRINT READING FOR ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY.

David P. Madsen is president of Engineering Drafting & Design, Inc., and vice president of Madsen Designs Inc. Dave provides drafting and design consultation and training for all disciplines and is an Autodesk Authorized Author. He has been a professional design drafter since 1996 and has extensive experience in a variety of drafting, design, and engineering disciplines. Dave has provided drafting and computer-aided design and drafting instruction to secondary and postsecondary learners since 1999, and he has considerable curriculum and program coordination and development experience. Dave holds a master of science degree in educational policy, foundations, and administrative studies, with a specialization in postsecondary, adult, and continuing education. He also holds a bachelor of science degree in technology education and an associate of science degree in general studies and drafting technology. Kindle edition is limited

I just downloaded the Kindle (for iPad) edition of this book, and the view options have been disabled by the publisher so there is no way to view a two-page display in landscape mode, among other limitations. I'm sure this will be an invaluable reference, but so far this is disappointing right off the bat.

Awesome Architectural Drafting and Design Book

The Architectural Drafting and Design book is an awesome book! I used the book when going through college many years ago and thought it was a very well written book then, especially from the standpoint of learning the ENTIRE architectural process and how it applies more specifically to creating construction documents, presentation drawings, and information. Since then I have used the book in my own classes teaching at the local community college and it has proved to be an invaluable resource. This latest version includes the latest techniques and strategies, and work process for the ever evolving architectural world. Kudos to David and Alan for a book well done!

I have used this textbook in my architectural drafting and design courses now for three editions. This book is excellent and the sixth edition is even better. This is the most comprehensive textbook on the market in this discipline. I have compared them all. The sixth edition is full color. The authors pay special attention to building codes. Students are provided with step-by-step instructions for preparing a complete set of residential architectural and light commercial drawings. There are numerous actual architectural projects that have been provided by architects and architectural designers. The US National CAD Standard is explained and described in detail. Special CADD Applications throughout provide information and examples about trends in CADD software used for architecture. This is not a software instructional book. This is an architectural design and drafting book that provides content that can be used with any software program. A new Going Green feature provides detailed information about LEED and many other innovative green technology applications. This edition explains the CSI standards better than any available textbook. Bottom line, there is no better book on this subject.

About the Author

C�sar Vega holds a Ph.D. in food science and a culinary degree from Le Cordon Bleu and is research manager at Mars Botanical, a division of Mars, Inc. He has consulted with several avant-garde restaurants on aspects relating to science-based cooking, and he regularly teaches seminars on the relation between science and cooking.

Job Ubbink is a senior consultant at Food Concept and Physical Design in Fl�h, Switzerland. Trained as a physical chemist and biophysicist, he has more than twelve years of R&D experience in the food industry. Along with his research on food material science and food biophysics, he is a passionate cook devoted to developing sustainable food practices and culture.

Erik van der Linden is professor of physics and physical chemistry of foods at Wageningen University. From 1991 to 1997, he worked at the interface of science and industry at Unilever Research in the Netherlands and in the United States, leading innovation projects on structural and sensory aspects of detergents, cosmetics, and foods. He earned his M.Sc. degree in theoretical physics and his Ph.D. at Leiden University and was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University, where he focused on the stability of oil in water emulsions.

Great for curious cooks!

"The Kitchen as Laboratory..." is a compliation of dozens of science experiments done to explain WHY foods do the things they do. Each chapter is written by different culinary chemists on a different topic. Most of the chapters begin with a question, like what benefit is given when you refrigerate cookie dough before cooking it? And what causes food to brown as it's cooked (loaves of bread, onions, etc.)? What ingredients make the perfect sponge cake? Which breads and cheeses make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich? What is the chemical reaction that makes a roux sauce come together?

These questions are answered using the scientific method, but not in an intimidating way! The authors' use everyday language to explain their experiments and results. In fact, included are microscopic pictures of the air bubbles inside sponge cake, diagrams of pork belly to show where the variety of bacon comes from, tables that show the conditions that speed up or slow down the Maillard Reaction (browning), and my favorite part, each chapter comes with a recipe that you can make in order to prove the authors' findings to yourself. The book has been designed to not only teach you, but to also help you become a better cook.

Some basic background knowledge of chemistry is needed in order to understand much of this book. Topics that the reader is assumed to know are things like the difference between amino acids and carbohydrates, pH, catalysts, metric measurements, and basic atomic attraction.

Interesting to read

I read a review of this book in Scientific American which is why I sought it out. I'm not a scientist, but I like reading about science that is understandable, and this book is. It is an anthology. Each chapter stands alone although occasionally there is a specific reference something in a previous chapter. It's beyond the basics, like what makes a cake rise. Rather it explains why refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough makes better cookies. It also offers a broad range of subject, and talks about the feel of food and the sound of food, the difference between crispy & crunchy. I really enjoyed it.
