An essential reading for both the business and the research

This three volume set distils the experience of a number of software practitioners, project managers, application engineers, researchers, and academics in dealing with framework-based software development. It offers a comprehensive and accessible treatment of the theory and practice of building and using application frameworks.
The three volumes address the needs both of the business and of the research. They suggest practical solutions to recurrent development problems and point out hot research topics.
In particular, Volume 1 "Building Application Frameworks" highlights the difficulties and draws the path towards the successful development of effective application frameworks. Each chapter has a final section with review questions and project proposals, which helps teachers and students to better assess the mastery of new concepts.
Volume 2 "Implementing Application Frameworks" comprises a number of case studies that exemplify how to develop complex frameworks by exploiting the synergy of advanced techniques and methodologies, such as design patterns, architectural styles, software components, multi-agent systems, and more.
Volume 3 "Domain-Specific Application Frameworks" emphasises the best practice in software development and reuse for a variety of application domains.

Excellent books to learn how to develop OOA Frameworks

This book in conjunction with the books "Domain-Specific Application Frameworks: Frameworks Experience by Industry" and "Implementing Application Frameworks: Object-Oriented Frameworks at Work" are a series of three books that constitute a complete and necessary guide for the design and implementation of application frameworks. They are based on multiple academic and industrial contributors experience building a wide range of domain-specific application framework. These books are very easy to read and understand and you can learn from them not only what a framework and an application framework are, but also how to apply this technology to real world domains, like manufacturing, health care, distributed computing, real-time systems, simulation environments, ...
First book, "Building Application Frameworks: Object-Oriented Foundations of Framework Design" introduces application frameworks, their benefits and problems. It addresses all the fundamental concepts behind OO application frameworks and provides guidelines for OO application framework development. It is organized in eight parts. Part one provides a complete overview of OO application framework technology describing what is an application framework, what are the problems and benefits of application frameworks and how to use, develop and evaluate an application framework. Part Two presents some historical application frameworks and discusses some general guidelines to increase the reusability of application frameworks. Part Three describes how to build a framework analysing a concrete domain. The rest of the book provides all the necessary information to completely build an application framework. It presents all the concepts managed in framework development, which are the different development approaches, how to test the resulting frameworks, the problems derived from integration and a question sometimes forgotten but very important, the framework documentation.
Second book, "Domain-Specific Application Frameworks: Frameworks Experience by Industry" is focused in the experience of industrial and academic contributors in the development of OO application framework in different domains. Each chapter covers step by step the complete development of an application framework in manufacturing, distributed systems, real-time systems, telecommunication, multimedia, chemistry and data visualization domains. It includes the motivation developers founded to choose application framework technology, the problems they had to solve and the final solutions they developed.
Third book, "Implementing Application Frameworks: Object-Oriented Frameworks at Work", shows step by step how to implement application frameworks in different domains. It is organized in six parts covering examples about i) Business Frameworks with different examples in sales and administrative domains, ii) Artificial Intelligence, iii) Agent Application Frameworks, presenting interesting frameworks for speech recognition, neural networks and agents. iv) Specialized tool frameworks, v) Language Specific Frameworks, vi) System Application Frameworks, which present and analyse the application of OO frameworks in combination with other methodologies as component-oriented programming, language constructs or constraint programming and vi) Experiences in Application Frameworks. This last section is very useful because analyse the lessons learned using the application framework technology.

An excellent walk through framework technologies

An almost indispensable 3-volume reading to understand the success of framework technologies in today's software systems. The books include most of the top articles on the subject, providing a thorough insight in both design and implementation issues regarding frameworks, also complemented with practical experience about framework usage. Although the work is mainly concentrated on technical aspects, the articles are comprehensible enough to be taken as reference material by a broad community, for example, software engineers, programmers, or technology managers. The books are useful for anybody planning to include framework-based techniques in software development processes or planning to improve current object-oriented practices. It is also an excellent source for graduate courses.
Volume 1 lays the fundamental concepts supporting object-oriented frameworks, and describes the problems and challenges that this technology raises in software development. The book covers topics such as domain analysis, development concepts and approaches, documentation, and management, among others. Of course, the compilation of articles makes some parts little redundant, but this is a minor detail compared with the fruitful contributions made by the book. In particular, the articles on reusing hooks, hot-spot-driven development, composing modeling frameworks in Catalysis, and composition problems, causes and solutions, are a sample of the outstanding level of this work. Each chapter adds at the end a number of related questions and student projects aiming to reinforce concepts and promote further investigation. As a comment, novice readers should take the sections concerning hooks and hot-spots carefully because these topics are presented in a slightly confusing way.
Volume 2 focuses on specific framework implementations, dealing with existing frameworks for different application domains, such as businesses, multi-agent systems, languages and system software. In this book, the readers will find a level of detail much closer to specific implementations issues than in the previous volume. Nonetheless, the writing style remains mostly clear and accessible for a quite broad audience. The case-studies and experience reports described by the articles show an attractive industrial perspective of the framework approach, and more important, they go an step forward in the road of a more mature discipline for software development. In addition, a CD-Rom with concrete examples of these applications is included with the book.
Volume 3 completes this series with a number of domain-specific application frameworks developed by industry, showing how to apply the concepts and ideas of the previous books in software products. In this line, it includes very interesting frameworks for manufacturing systems and distributed systems, among others. It also goes through concrete software scenarios, illustrating the benefits of combining domain knowledge and object-orientation expertise. Although the level of the articles is rather odd, the volume certainly provides the readers a realistic picture of the problems of building and adapting frameworks by learning from others' experience. A CD-Rom is also included with this book.
Overall, these framework books collect the state-of-the-art on framework development, offering a comprehensive and easy-to-understand guide for both academics and practitioners in the field. It is clear that framework technologies will not solve all the problems (perhaps they rise more challenges than current approaches), however, taking advantage of the framework possibilities can make your development process more repeatable, productive, and also less painful. Fantastic read. Especially for aspiring ad designers

Fantastic read. Especially for aspiring ad designers. The little details on how this massive campaign became a staple of advertising are fantastic and make for a great read. I've gotten 3 copies now to give to graphic designer friends for gifts, they've all loved this book. It breaks down each design and the process of how that particular ad and concept came to be and how it relates to pop culture or the likes relative to that time period. Very inclusive.

I love Absolut ad's and have always wanted to get one. They are expensive new , so I got an used copy from an amazon seller. It came quickly and I flipped through the book for about 20 min when it arrived 2 days later. I love all the ads and they are all so clever. I might not get some of the modern art ones, but I love the city ones in particular. Anyway, I got this book for my new house and new coffee table book, I think it is one of the best hardcover coffee table book (marketing story book) ever.

This is a terrific book, with information about how the wonderful Absolut vodka advertising campaign began. The real strength of the book is the collection of images. In some cases, looking at an entire campaign all together takes something away from the individual ads. This is not the case for these advertisements -- taken together, they are even cooler than they were in their original magazine contexts.
I just hope they will do a second volume when there are enough new ads to justify it.

The legendary Lang

I am so glad I got this book. Robert Lang is legendary for his perfect execution in realism. Every model he has created is gallery acceptable. My gripe about this book is that the cover and the quality of models suggests that it is on the easier side of the spectrum. Maybe its because this book is a little older but some of the diagrams and not easily understandable. I have been doing origami for many years and a bunch of the models require a lot of brain power and my own experience. I would reccommend this book, but not to new folders.

Can I give it 6 or 7 stars?

In my opinion, the books to date containing the most complicated and outrageous origami models are the following: Kawahata's Dinosaur, Issei's Supercomplex , and this CHAMPION , Lang's Insects. Every model here needs a lot (really a lot) patience and many-year folding experience. Or you MUST fail in folding over half of them. There are lots of unexpected and new technics, every model is in a neatly calculated mathematical proportion and with the exactly right number in every part (eyes, legs, antennas, etc.) In Facing such a book, I completely, deeply, adore the art of origami.

I love this book! The insect origamis are fantastic, and even after months I'm still trying to make all of them. You need to be at least a intermediate level origami folder to be able to successfully fold them. I'm stuck on 2 of them, and I've been folding since childhood.

Totally worth every penny. Buy it if you enjoy origami.

first hand historical accounts

Mr. Brady takes you into the west during a time when the Native Americans were making their last stand. His exhaustive journalistic studies have given us a timeless account of what it was like to both be a Native American and a Calvary fighter during the 1870's.

Although Mr. Brady attempts to take an objective view of both sides, he is biased towards the Calvary and one cannot help but to ponder the Native Americans view point as they struggle for their freedom aganist unbeatable odds.

I would recommend this book to anyone! I particulary enjoy reading historical accounts and this is one of the best I have ever read.

One of the best books ever about the Sioux Wars

The author's book is required reading for any student of the battles the U.S. cavalry had against the Sioux and Cheyennes from 1866 to 1877. All of the engagements are studied in detail and Brady had the great fortune to get first-hand accounts of the fighting from soldiers in the field during those hostilities. Brady's work is a pleasant read with a swift narrative and the love of his work is present on every page. The tone of Brady's book seems to suggests sympathy for the Indian plight because of the U.S. government's unfair posture that backed the Sioux and Cheyenne into a corner with no choice but to defend their homeland and hunting grounds. However, Brady is writing history from the white man's point of view and his bias creeps into his book on occasion. There are several pages of interesting correspondence between Brady and officers of the Seventh Cavalry regarding Custer's orders from General Terry and the letter and spirit of those orders. Great history and writing from the Reverend Brady.

No Code Included

The Kindle Fire version of this textbook is generally easy to use and I am mostly happy with it. It is so much handier to have an EBook version than lugging around a bulky print book that it makes up for the few faults I have encountered. I wish it came with standard Kindle functionality but this is not the case. I have vision problems so the ability to re-size the font would be nice. You can expand/contract the image size with finger pinching movements but have to do so on each page, and having to scroll around the expanded page in order to see all of the text gets a bit old. On the plus side, you can make notes and bookmarks, and the text is searchable. I expect that if Amazon could have included Kindle functions, they would have.

I have one complaint that Amazon CAN address. The product description does not make it clear that a WileyPlus access code is NOT included in the price. If you are taking an on-line class this code will have to be purchased separately. For price shoppers out there, this is critical information and should be included in the description. This is true of any text book which would normally have an access code, not just this particular book.

This "math journey" progresses exponentially as kids try to keep up with the yield of an out-of-control popcorn machine. Professor X teaches them to count by powers of 10, demonstrating up to a googol (10100) and beyond, as the kids provide a running commentary. While they don't seem much closer to knowing how many kernels of popcorn they have, they do learn a lot of big numbers and entertain each other with such nonsense names as "splendillion" and "elephantillion." Schwartz (Magic of a Million Activity Book) originally used bags of popcorn to demonstrate powers of 10 in school presentations. However, here the hands-on technique of counting the kernels is never explained; the value of the popcorn example is less clear in book form. Sidebars rattle off numerical trivia, adding zeros on every spread (e.g., "One little brown bat can snap up 600 mosquitoes per hour"; "There are 40,000 different characters in Chinese"). These ever-larger numbers inspire Meisel's (The Fixits) lively cartoon illustrations of 105 bees and five billion (or 5 x 109) people in the world. While readers' minds will be reeling with zeroes, they will be buoyed by Schwartz's and Meisel's infinite enthusiasm for their subject. Ages 6-10. (Sept.)

Grade 2-4-Schwartz helps youngsters conceptualize enormous numbers by introducing them to counting by powers of ten. Professor X, along with his dog Y, comes to the rescue of some children with an out-of-control popcorn popper as they futilely attempt to count the kernels. The Professor begins to "power count," rapidly reaching large numbers through the addition of zeros. The scenes change as the Professor counts from 1 to 10 to 100 to 1,000 , from a camp out in the woods, to the seashore, rain forest, north pole . All the while, the children echo his explanations of the counting process. Each double-page spread is illustrated with watercolors in lively cartoon fashion with lots of detail. Sidebars include one section where Y shows how exponents can be manipulated, and another section entitled "Did You Know?" The factoids presented show the prevalence of things in large number: "Every day 37,000,000 (thirty-seven million) Tootsie Rolls come rolling out of the factory." Yet, they bear no relationship to power counting, and may even serve as a distraction. And while the children do reach large numbers counting this way, they never actually count the popcorn. Also, exponents are generally not introduced until fifth or sixth grade, where this picture book will have less appeal. However, for the most part it works as an introduction to the subject, and fans of Schwartz's How Much Is a Million (1985) and If You Made a Million (1989, both Lothrop) will probably enjoy it.

Amazing facts about millions, trillions, and much bigger numbers are explained in picture-book cartoon scenarios, contributed by Paul Meisel, that show kids in the classroom, at the seashore, in the rain forest, and all over the place, learning how to count by powers of 10. The design is busy, with sidebars and balloon comments. Each double-page spread is clearly meant to be talked about, and the discussions aren't overwhelming. The sheer numbers are astounding, though, whether they refer to the population of the U.S. or the number of stars in the Milky Way; and the explanation of exponents gives kids a way to count what seems unimaginable. In a funny gag, one kid keeps asking, "Have we reached infinity yet?" and the answers make math awesome and yet accessible--even for those of us who are scared of all those zeros. Hazel Rochman

Great book for all ages

On Beyond a Million is fantastic. I shared it with my third grade class as part of a lesson about big numbers (and a pre-pre-introduction to the basis of scientific notation, although I didn't take it that far with the kids). The book calls counting by powers of ten "power counting" and that was quite adequate for 9 year olds! The book is well written, full of fun illustrations, and presents the concept of big numbers and "power counting" in a way that third graders found highly engaging. I have to admit, however, the book also enabled me a greater understanding of what really big numbers are all about... and there's not a google of anything, by the way :) On Beyond a Million also includes a number of interesting # facts (e.g. how much rain forest is destroyed every minute, number of mosquitoes a little brown bat eats, and how many hairs on a square inch of a human head) that get bigger as larger powers of ten are introduced page by page. After reading this book to/with the class I showed them Ray and Charles Eames' "Powers of Ten." The book gave meaning to large numbers and what adding a power of ten does and was a perfect intro for the film. I've also taught 5th and 6th grade and am confident the book would interest just about any audience. I loved it!

This is a good book for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. The illustrations help keep the children's attention. It would definitely be good for an inclusion class.

Cynicism resurrected

Ian Cutler has written an impressive and compelling book on the development of Cynicism from classical times to our own time. The book is simply extraordinary from the point of view of scholarship and because of its argument, namely, the Cynicism, the philosophical stance of Diogenes of Sinope, is the most relevant philosophy for the twenty-first century, a thesis with which I am in full agreement. I congratulate the author of his important philosophical and sociological contribution, and I urge prospective readers to plunge themselves into the pages of this book. They will surely learn a great deal and enjoy Cutler's persuasive prose.
