Steven M. Cahn is professor of philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He has written or edited some fifty books, including Fate, Logic, and Time; God, Reason, and Religion; Saints and Scamps: Ethics in Academia; and From Student to Scholar: A Candid Guide to Becoming a Professor.

Christine Vitrano is associate professor of philosophy at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. She is the author of The Nature and Value of Happiness and coeditor, with Steven M. Cahn, of Happiness: Classic and Contemporary Readings in Philosophy.

Good start but fizzled at the end

This book started out with a bang, went into a couple of tailspins and then fizzled out like a wet firecracker. The philosophical duo of Cahn and Vitrano, both professors in New York City's CUNY system, started with a clear and actually very funny exposition of what it means to live a a good life. In very clear steps, they explained how one could be moral and unhappy, moral and happy, immoral and happy and immoral and unhappy. They also pretty much laid to rest the notion that true happiness is only available to those who engage in loftier activities, like attending the opera or reading classical literature. No, a person can be happy watching professional wrestling or collecting string, for that matter. At times, I was actually laughing out loud at some of their comments, like when they equated repetitive actions to the philosophical enterprise of writing papers to elicit responses, a cycle that can go on forever. Then, the wheels fell off the bus. Sorry to say this, but their treatment of God as a player in morality was shallow and amateurish. A little reading of 2,000 years of theology might help. Specifically, God is not subject to moral standards; he is those moral standards. Finally, the book ended rather weakly, with an ultimate appeal to living the good life via a combination of living according to the wisdom of the Book of Ecclesiastes and to the teachings of Epicurus, summarized in the statement "Be good and enjoy." I don't want to poo poo this book too much. Along with the disappointing bits, there is a lot of good philosophy and some very interesting material. In particular, the book's first few chapters are an excellent example of philosophical argumentation, modelling how both sides of an issue can be presented and dissected in the search for truth.

About the Author
Dr. Allen Hunt is a nationally known speaker and best-selling author. His books include: Confessions of a Mega-Church Pastor: How I Discovered the Hidden Treasures of the Catholic Church; Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody; and Nine Words: A Bible Study to Help You Become the Best-Version-of-Yourself.

Allen stepped aside July 1, 2007, as Senior Pastor at Mount Pisgah, a congregation serving more than 15,000 persons each week through all of its ministries in Alpharetta, Georgia, outside Atlanta. While at Mount Pisgah, Allen helped to develop comprehensive ministries with children and students as well as a Christian School with over 1200 students; a Beacon of Hope pregnancy resource center; and the Summit Counseling Center.

On January 6 2008, on the Feast of the Epiphany, Allen converted to Catholicism. This transition represented the culmination of a 15 year journey in which God began leading Allen home to the Church. In many ways, this transition was effected by the prayers of a group of Dominican sisters at Monastery of Our Lady of Grace in North Guilford, Connecticut, who have been praying for Allen since he shared lectures with them during the season of Lent in 1992.

Prior to full-time ministry, Allen worked in management consulting with Kurt Salmon Associates, an international leader in the textile, apparel, and retail industries. Allen was educated at Mercer (B.B.A.) and Emory (M.Div.) Universities, before earning a Ph.D. in New Testament and Ancient Christian Origins from Yale University.

Allen and his wife, Anita, live in Atlanta. They have two grown daughters.

Audie Murphy was the most decorated American soldier during World War II. He went on to a long film career, starring in The Red Badge of Courage, The Quiet American, and his own To Hell and Back. He was killed in a plane crash in 1971 at age forty-six.

Sure wish every adult could read at least some of this book. The movie is tremendous (wish it had a much bigger budget), but there is so much more in the book. I am aware that some people will not want to read a few of the graphic sections, where we see through Audie Murphy's eyes what high explosives and machine guns can do to the human body. Still, Audie Murphy takes a humble, humane approach to his service to America. Not truly looking to hurt anyone, but understands what war is, and wants to end it as soon as possible. His primary devotion is to those immediately around him, whom he protects to the absolute best of his ability, even if that means facing the enemy alone. Maturity beyond his teenage years, but I suppose that comes with being orphaned and having to care for younger siblings. Most importantly, in the heat of battle, Audie Murphy understands what "calm fury" means, and he practices it even when it would be much easier to take a different approach. It truly is unbelievable that he survived. A measure of the man is that this book focuses almost exclusively on relationships, strategies, team objectives, etc., only mentioning his personal promotions when necessary, and never mentioning the numerous honors he received. I'm very grateful this book was written and that I had the opportunity to read it. Update: I went back through the book and tried to estimate the number of US soldiers who were killed within a few yards of Audie Murphy, and it is somewhere around 400. If we include those who were grievously wounded near him, it would be over 1,000. Of his original platoon that started in North Africa, he was the only one standing at the end of the war. Of the seven officers involved in the Colmar Pocket battle where Audie earned the Medal of Honor, he was the only officer who survived. I also tried to estimate the number of Germans he killed in direct combat, and that is somewhere around 90, with a lot of them being killed in one-on-one, cat-and-mouse duels. He even volunteered to go after snipers. He went forward, when the rest of his unit was holed up or moving toward the rear. He grabbed machine guns from crews that were hiding, pulled them into the open, and took the fight to the enemy. Many times, bullets were hitting so closely that they knocked dust into his eyes. If you count the air strikes he called in around his positions, he accounts for a total of about 250 enemy deaths, extremely conservatively speaking. To say it's a miracle he lived through 3 years of this type of fighting is an enormous understatement. Even among miracles, it's miraculous. Read the book!

Great Book about a Great Man.

Excellent and well-written book. Because Murphy didn't even graduate high school, it is hard to imagine he wrote this book without a ghost writer. I have never heard mention of this.

Anyway, I have liked Audie Murphy as an actor (B-rated westerns but also To Hell and Back itself). He never seemed to think he was a better actor than he actually was (for example, like Sylvester Stallone). He definitely had PTSD as did many other war veterans (including 2 of my uncles) and I believe maybe the book and its corresponding movie helped him with it? I want to think so.

I will always remember hearing about his death when I was camping in the Sierras with my family.

Audie Murphy wrote this four years after the war ended and it led to a Hollywood movie of the same title starring Murphy. Astonishing stories of daily life on the battlefield, Murphy relates the tragedy of war and the comedy of his comrades even under the grimmest circumstances. This book is a MUST READ by all Americans. It will give you new perspectives of war and a greater appreciation for our military personnel who willing live through hell for the cause of Freedom. You will never see war the same way again. And you'll want to hug every war veteran you meet.

A refreshing perspective

This book is the main text for an undergraduate course in GIS in my university department. The book serves as a nice introduction to some fundamentals of GISs and does a particularly good job at linking the theoretical constructs and concepts with specific application domains. There are many examples of the applicability of the theories on specific industrial and governmental projects.

Chrisman is a gifted author and provides a refreshing perspective of how to think about geographic information systems. It all starts rather abstractly with levels of measurement, reference systems and measurement frameworks. Choices in these levels turn out to be what dictates the adoption of field vs. object data models (the classic dichotomy in GISs) and raster vs. vector structures consequently. The author then proceeds in exposing operations of increasing complexity on these structures, and does a very systematic work on categorizing them. A plethora of diagrams, figures, and footnote-definitions of important terms complement the text nicely. The final chapters on the ties of GISs with society and culture are also very interesting. The whole book has a flow and a strong structure, a feature that I value especially in technical books. There are no loose chapters and everything builds on what has been discussed before.

Of course as an introductory textbook it leaves out some areas of investigation and comments only scarcely on others. For example the chapters on comprehensive operations and transformations are just very generic overviews. Models such as spaghetti or topological database structures are also very superficially presented, hence the 4-star rating.

Overall, a very interesting, clearly written, and consice introduction to GISs.

Outstanding high-level overview

I am an experienced GIS professional and this book is one of my favorites in my library. It is the best single source for understanding the scientific and technological context of GIS. This book has changed the way I think about GIS.
