Very difficult to understand

The author has good mathematics, but not the abilities to explain something clearly to a student or a beginner. I need to buy another book.

Digital version a pain. errors. unapproachable.

I bought this without reading the fine print (shame on me). Apparently, the "kindle" version doesn't actually work on the Kindle. Nor does it work on any android device except the Kindle Fire. It does say it works on "PC", by which it means Windows only... This is an unacceptable delivery method. It has a relatively large number of errors. The material is presented in an unapproachable way, such that it's probably most useful as a reference for someone who just needs a reminder of available techniques. I used this for a semester course in graduate computer vision. I'm also a math major, so my problem with the book is not a lack of proper background.

Difficult read

This book is the required textbook for a class. I ordered the 2nd edition after reading the poor reviews dating back to well before the second edition had been published. It was my hope that perhaps a major rewrite had occurred after that author absorbed the poor reviews. Sadly, that does not appear to be the case. I am just starting the class and have much of the book left to read, but the frustration felt by past reviewers is now clearly understood by me.

In general, the book tends to run both hot and cold. Clearly the authors are deeply knowledgeable about the subject. And there are many good sections of the book that do reasonable job of explaining the concepts. It is the sections that dive into the math where the authors tend to undermine their own hard work and that, I believe, are source of a number of the book's poor reviews.

One of the topics of the book is the classification (of images), so in keeping with this let me attempt to classify this book. This book seems to fall into the category of a book written by really smart people that loses more than it has to when read by a not-so-smart person. Said differently, this is probably a great book for those that already know the subject and the math. That is, the book can be quite readable for a few paragraphs and give the reader some intuition for the topic. However, when the book dives into the math for a few paragraphs and then emerges on the far shore, it has probably abandoned most readers. Certainly, more often than not it has abandoned me and, from the reviews, I believe that I am not the only one. I suspect the authors have majors in math, but perhaps they have been swimming in the math for so long that it has become comfortable. Whatever the reason, the authors do a poor job in setting up the math, are too dependent on concise math notation (again which would be well know to a math major but not necessarily by others) and as the math discussion progresses the authors make among the largest leaps mathematically among any textbook that I can recall. Additionally, the sections that discuss the math seem to be of varying quality. Often I would get the sense that what made it to final print were a set of notes or a rough draft that had not yet been completed let alone edited.

Regarding the poor setup and excessive brevity in a passage I just read, the authors describe an equation as having three terms, then they give the equation and never state which term is which. As the math unfolds, the reader is stuck because, although he can read the transformations relating to (for example) the rho term he does not know which term is represented by rho. The author also at points use what I find to be a somewhat odd notation (e.g., for linear algebra). In general a few examples would go a long way as well. The authors attempts at homogeneous coordinates and scale rotate and translate was awful and awfully short. A book that I have on motion in robotics spends perhaps 5 times as many pages to discuss a similar topic, with more examples and less dense notation, with the upshot being that the reader of the robotics book walks away having learned the concept and the Computer Vision reader walks away confused and having learned little (again, a math major might have been able to track better with the CV book and gotten a little more).

Were the authors to read this critique, they might counter that they were trying limit the math and instead to provide narratives that provide for an intuitive understanding of the subject. This would be a fair point and a worthy goal. When writing a book, the author must decide who his intended audience is; e.g., an undergraduate engineering student, a graduate student, academic colleagues, etc. However, if this was their intent then the approach the authors took was not unlike trying to meet a page count by removing every third word from the draft text.

In short, of what I have read so far, this book can only be followed without great struggle by those already familiar with the subject and the math. It has lots of potential, so I hope that the authors take the criticism in the constructive spirit in which it is offered with the result being a still better third edition.

this book is not terribly useful to a librarian

Despite many articles about ethics, this book is not terribly useful to a librarian. In the real world, you could really use better advice about what a license really is, and whether the materials you've paid for belong to your library or require paying every 25 downloads. Annoying. At some point there needs to be a supreme court decision about the issue of libraries and licenses, and whether a digital rip of an audiobook falls under the license or not. Physical discs get ruined by patrons borrowing them, but a digital copy streaming to a patron, under their card ID, ought to be legal. But this needs to be decided officially. Libraries don't have unlimited budgets, and patrons can be incredibly destructive towards optical media. Even Azuradisc polishers can't keep up with their ability to destroy things. And this book doesn't discuss it at all. The issues of digital licenses, constantly violated by patrons copying an audiobook through auto-ripping onto their PC, is ALSO not discussed as an ethical issue. It should be, but ethics are complex and there's a degree of apologism involved. So perhaps a future edition of this book will do so, and possibly add a bit of narrative so we can connect the cases provided in a logical framework.

Controlling the Internet

found this book full of very interesting information and very readable as well.

The essence of this book (to me anyway) is the efforts and actions of the states in an attempt to establish controls over the exchange of information on the web. To name some examples, China has restricted access to the web to prevent dissidents from being able to criticize the Government, the United States has a whole series of laws and regulations to prohibit certain types of pornographic pictures or writing -- you’d best not have any child porn on a computer anyone can see, the police, FBI, et al will not like you. Just recently the FCC has just released a ruling about accessing the internet by big companies willing to pay more for higher performance.

Not a large book, some 237 numbered pages, it is just about as easy and interesting to read as a novel, if of course you have any interest in the big picture of the internet. All in all, the United States has a whole bunch of laws and a number lawmakers who appear on TV once in a while proposing new laws to prevent something they don’t like. What governments cannot stand is the old west like freedom of the internet.

so the money I saved was nice. The book itself wasn't that bad

This was a required book for my Cyber Ethics class. I bought it because it was $40 cheaper than through my college, so the money I saved was nice. The book itself wasn't that bad, but it's a little wordy for my tastes. I would suggest having google up when you're reading this because there are legal phrases that I didn't know and the book didn't say what they meant, you're just expected to know already. All and all, good book and keeps you interested, but a bit too wordy.

Massive Monograph of All the World's Parrots.

There have been 7 editions of this landmark work by Joseph Forshaw and William Cooper that I know of, all of which are out of print. Shopping for a copy of "Parrots of the World" on the secondary market can be confusing. The book was originally published in 1973 and had 584 pages. Landsdowne Press was the Australian publisher (ISBN 0701800240), and Doubleday was the US publisher (ISBN 0385056281). In 1977, TFH Publications, with the cooperation of Doubleday, published another edition that is distinguished by not having a dust jacket (ISBN 0876669593). The cover artwork is part of the slick, white cover. Ease of locating and identifying the illustrations was improved. A year later, in 1978, TFH further improved upon the book by expanding the indices. The 1978 edition has the same ISBN and cover art as the 1977 edition, but says "Improved 1978 Edition" on the cover. A "Revised Second Edition" with 616 pages came in 1980 (ISBN 0701806907) from Eastview Editions. A "Revised Third Edition" was published by Avian Publications in 1989 (ISBN 0701828005). The 3rd edition has 672 pages and includes new plates illustrating differences in the plumage of mature and immature birds. Second and third editions were also published in Australia, and perhaps the UK, with different publishers and ISBNs. In 2000, a "Limited Edition", still with 672 pages, was published by Avian books. All of the editions (not including the foreign editions) have different cover art. All have dust jackets except the 1977 and 1978 editions.

I'm reviewing the 1978 edition, with a Double Yellow-Headed Amazon and a Blue-Fronted Amazon on the cover, as that is the one I have right now. The author, Joseph M. Forshaw was an Australian ornithologist specializing in parrots. Illustrator William T. Cooper, was an Australian painter best known for his depictions of birds. The book is organized by Distributions: Pacific, Afro-Asian, and South American, which are further divided into Family, Sub-family, Genus, and Species. Sub-species are found within the listing for the species. This is also how the birds are listed in the table of contents. The book's two indices provide a more efficient method of locating a particular species, however. There is an English Name index and a Scientific Name index. The author has used the common name from the species' nation of origin whenever possible, so some of the names may be unfamiliar. For example, a rose-breasted cockatoo is a "galah", an umbrella cockatoo a "white cockatoo", and what we might call a cherry-headed conure or red-masked parakeet is a "red-masked conure". I find it simplest to use the scientific name index.

The Preface explains how the book is organized. The book's Introduction provides informative explanations of the classification of parrots, their anatomy (including diagrams), and their natural history. Each Distribution is introduced with an explanation of what species lie within that region. Descriptions of the attributes of each Family, Sub-family, and Genus introduce each sub-section of the book. For each species, there is a physical description, distribution (with map), a list of sub-species (with physical descriptions), followed by General Notes, which encompasses just about anything ornithologists have observed and documented about the species, including calls, nesting habits, and a description of its eggs. This edition of "Parrots of the World" was researched primarily in the late 1960s. Some information on the distribution and endangerment of parrot species may be outdated. It is also likely that more and better information has since been amassed for the General Notes sections. Still, there is a great deal of information in "Parrots of the World". It was the first monograph on parrots published in over a century, and it's still overwhelming. Approximately 340 species of parrot, including all extant species, are represented and described. There are 155 full-page illustrations by William Cooper. Most have more than one bird in the picture so that nearly 500 birds, including divergent sub-species, are illustrated. The illustrations are not as detailed as Roger Tory Peterson's, but they are striking and convincing. Parrot lovers will find "Parrots of the World" a pleasure to peruse.

It's unfortunate that this book is out of print, as it's a parrot fanatic's ultimate reference to parrots in the wild. Beautifully illustrated with full-color plates, it covers every known species of parrot, and some that are sadly extinct since its printing. It provides information on all aspects of psittacines in the wild as far as they are known, from size to range to breeding habits to habitat, but it's really the illustrations that make this book so valuable. If you're at all interested in wild parrots, this book is among the best.

Very good, but old

This is a good review of parrots as of around 1960. If you are interested in what their original distribution was, this is a great book. If you want to know what species are endangered now, this isn't the place to look.
The text and illustrations are generally good, with references to original sources (albeit old ones). Age also explains the dearth of information about breeding and behavior for many species

About the Author
Mel Friedman, M.S., has a diversified background in mathematics, having taught both high school and college-level mathematics courses. Mr. Friedman was awarded his B.A. in Mathematics from Rutgers University and received his M.S. in Mathematics (with honors) from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Congratulations! You’re joining the millions of people who have discovered the value and educational advantage offered by the College Board’s College-Level Examination Program, or CLEP. This test prep covers everything you need to know about the CLEP College Mathematics exam, and will help you earn the college credit you deserve while reducing your tuition costs.

GETTING STARTED
There are many different ways to prepare for a CLEP exam. What’s best for you depends on how much time you have to study and how comfortable you are with the subject matter. To score your highest, you need a system that can be customized to fit you: your schedule, your learning style, and your current level of knowledge.

This book, and the online tools that come with it, allow you to create a personalized study plan through three simple steps: assessment of your knowledge, targeted review of exam content, and reinforcement in the areas where you need the most help.

THE REA STUDY CENTER
The best way to personalize your study plan and focus on your weaknesses is to get feedback on what you know and what you don’t know. At the online REA Study Center, you can access two types of assessment: a diagnostic exam and full-length practice exams. Each of these tools provides true-to-format questions and delivers a detailed score report that follows the topics set by the College Board.

Diagnostic Exam
Before you begin your review with the book, take the online diagnostic exam. Use your score report to help evaluate your overall understanding of the subject, so you can focus your study on the topics where you need the most review.

Full-Length Practice Exams
These practice tests give you the most complete picture of your strengths and weaknesses. After you’ve finished reviewing with the book, test what you’ve learned by taking the first of the two online practice exams. Review your score report, then go back and study any topics you missed. Take the second practice test to ensure you have mastered the material and are ready for test day.

If you’re studying and don’t have Internet access, you can take the printed tests in the book. These are the same practice tests offered at the REA Study Center, but without the added benefits of timed testing conditions and diagnostic score reports. Because the actual exam is computer-based, we recommend you take at least one practice test online to simulate test-day conditions.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXAM
The CLEP College Mathematics exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answer choices, to be answered in 90 minutes. The exam covers the material one would find in a college-level class for non-mathematics majors in fields not requiring knowledge of advanced mathematics. The exam places little emphasis on arithmetic and calculators are not allowed. A nongraphing calculator is provided to the test taker during the examination as part of the testing software.

What is the CLEP?
CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in North America. CLEP exams are available in 33 subjects and test the material commonly required in an introductory-level college course. Examinees can earn from three to twelve credits at more than 2,900 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. Who takes CLEP exams?
CLEP exams are typically taken by people who have acquired knowledge outside the classroom and who wish to bypass certain college courses and earn college credit. The CLEP program is designed to reward examinees for learning—no matter where or how that knowledge was acquired.

Although most CLEP examinees are adults returning to college, many graduating high school seniors, enrolled college students, military personnel, veterans, and international students take CLEP exams to earn college credit or to demonstrate their ability to perform at the college level. There are no prerequisites, such as age or educational status, for taking CLEP examinations.

However, because policies on granting credits vary among colleges, you should contact the particular institution from which you wish to receive CLEP credit.

Who administers the exam?
CLEP exams are developed by the College Board, administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), and involve the assistance of educators from throughout the United States. The test development process is designed and implemented to ensure that the content and difficulty level of the test are appropriate.

OPTIONS FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL AND VETERANS
CLEP exams are available free of charge to eligible military personnel and eligible civilian employees. All the CLEP exams are available at test centers on college campuses and military bases. Contact your Educational Services Officer or Navy College Education Specialist for more information. Visit the DANTES or College Board websites for details about CLEP opportunities for military personnel.

Eligible U.S. veterans can claim reimbursement for CLEP exams and administration fees pursuant to provisions of the Veterans Benefits Improvement Act of 2004. For details on eligibility and submitting a claim for reimbursement, visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website at www.gibill.va.gov.

CLEP can be used in conjunction with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which applies to veterans returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of operation. Because the GI Bill provides tuition for up to 36 months, earning college credits with CLEP exams expedites academic progress and degree completion within the funded timeframe.

Great practice, a bit more difficult than the test

I purchased this in preparation for the College Mathematics CLEP exam (took it April 2014). I did the diagnostic test as well as the practice exams, which were included with the book. The timer on the practice tests helped me learn to pace myself for the real exam. After taking the exam, I found that the questions in the book & practice exams were much more difficult than the ones on the actual CLEP, but I'd rather have it that way than to practice easy questions and have the real test be more difficult. The material was completely relevant and a great review as I haven't studied this type of math in 8-10 years. The solutions are broken down after the problem, and easy to understand. I studied for about a week before the exam and scored a 79/80. Good luck!

One Entire Section NOT COVERED

I was surprised to see that this book leaves out AN ENTIRE SECTION tested on the CLEP. There is ZERO financial math included, and it is now part of the CLEP. I was able to use the other parts quite well and passed with a 61, but the fact that I was not prepped at all for the financial math was jarring. It says on the CLEP website that financial math is part of it, so I glanced over it, but was disappointed that this prep system does not cover it at all. Be warned.

excellent buy!

To tell the truth, I was really nervous to take the CLEP exam... but once I got this book, I got online and took their diagnostic CLEP, which is free with the code on the inside of the book. It told me EXACTLY which sections in the book i had to study and which ones I had just gotten a little rusty on and needed touching up on. In addition, each section had a ten question quiz at the end so you could make sure u understood it. It saved me so much time and I took their two practice tests online (also free with the code on the inside and the two practice tests are also in the book, but the online version times you and helps u get used to taking this kind of test at a computer). Also, each test and quiz, online at their site or in their book, includes a comprehensive explanation to each question so u could understand where u went wrong in getting your answer. And the best part is that I aced that CLEP, only getting 3 out of the 60 test questions wrong! Good luck on the college mathematics CLEP and I hope you find this review useful.
