About the Authors:

Jennifer Cartier is the director of teacher education and a member of the science education faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Her work focuses on the design and facilitation of learning contexts for pre-service and early career teachers.

Margaret Smith holds a joint appointment at the University of Pittsburgh as professor of mathematics education in the School of Education and as Senior Scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center. Her research focuses on what teachers learn from the professional education experiences in which they engage.

Mary Kay Stein holds a joint appointment at the University of Pittsburgh as professor of learning sciences and policy and as Senior Scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center. Her research focuses on mathematics teaching and learning in classrooms and the ways in which policy and organizational conditions shape teachers practice.

Danielle K. Ross is a teaching fellow and doctoral candidate in science education at the School of Education of the University of Pittsburgh. Her work focuses on teacher learning and the design of learning contexts for beginning teachers. She was previously a biology and ecology teacher at Leechburg Area School District in Leechburg, Pennsylvania.

Her research focuses on what teachers learn from the professional education experiences in which they engage. Jennifer Cartier is the director of teacher education and a member of the science education faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Her work focuses on the design and facilitation of learning contexts for pre-service and early career teachers. Mary Kay Stein holds a joint appointment at the University of Pittsburgh as professor of learning sciences and policy and as Senior Scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center. Her research focuses on mathematics teaching and learning in classrooms and the ways in which policy and organisational conditions shape teachers' practise. Danielle K. Ross is a teaching fellow and doctoral candidate in science education at the School of Education of the University of Pittsburgh. Her work focuses on teacher learning and the design of learning contexts for beginning teachers. She was previously a biology and ecology teacher at Leechburg Area School District in Leechburg, Pennsylvania.

About the Author
Hearn (1850-1904) was born in Levkas, Greece, as the son of Greek and British parents. In 1869 he went to the United States and did various work, finally as a journalist. In 1890 he came to Japan and taught English in Japanese schools, and became a Japanese citizen under the name of Koizumi Yakuma. He died in Tokyo.

As of 1897, Lafcadio Hearn had already published several books eloquently introducing Japan to the English-reading world, capturing an unfamiliar glimpse of the country and its culture at a critical juncture during the Meiji years in the process. What was there left to glean? A rich harvest, in fact. "Gleanings in Buddha-Fields" is an elegant and evocative and yet imminently informative collection of diaphanously linked essays. The variety of Hearn's points of focus flow with a peculiar rhythm all his own--literature, travelogue, folklore, or the oxygen-thin heights of Buddhist philosophy--but the undertow remains his abiding interest in Japanese religion and spirituality in its many differing manifestations. From themes of karma and rebirth in contemporary love poetry and working songs to heady explications of Nirvana and Emptiness, from the old cultural capital of Kyoto to the bustling commercial center of Osaka, Hearn unfolds this topic delicately in a seemingly rambling roundabout manner in rich (sometimes just a bit overly so) language crafted to entertain, inspire, and perhaps even enlighten. Many works written about Japan by Westerners in Hearn's time hold interest nowadays merely as historical fossils of cultural interaction and tend to be embarrassingly unreliable, something not true of Hearn and his work here, combining as it does a scholarly knowledge unusual in his day, a keenly discerning eye just as rare today, and most of all a genuinely deep and abiding regard for the nation he ended up adopting as his own.

Wonderful Book for Managers to Parents

Simple read and to the point. Using basic Pavlovian conditioning to manage employee behavior. I found this book extremely helpful in how I was approaching my employees. It is amazing how you forget the basics when you are stuck in the rigmarole of the day. This was a great reminder to get back to basics on consistent and instant feedback. I would recommend to all managers and parents as the concepts absolutely apply to behavior in the home.

If he weren't such a good action writer, Rollins might make a dynamite climatologist. Each of his thrillers has featured as a central character an extreme environment, most recently the Arctic ice (Ice Hunt, 2003) and now the hot sands of Saudi Arabia. Just the right amount of sand...

I totally dislike sand. It’s gritty and grimy. When the wind blows sand all about it gets in your hair, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. The only good place for sand is on a beach. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read a book titled “SANDSTORM” with depictions of sand, sand, and more sand being blown all about somewhere in the sandy Middle East.

However, the fact of the matter was I got hooked with bizarre thoughts of a plot involving antimatter—especially since I read a wee bit of antimatter can make a big bang.

James did a good job of telling a compelling story. He didn’t over do the sand and storm parts, but used it rather nicely as a timely part of the plot. His balance of science was just about right. He did a masterful job of blending the here and now of modern day with an ancient time eons ago when Mother Earth was much younger. I especially liked the look behind the scenes provided by his Author’s Notes when he separates fact from fiction.

Great first Sigma Force novel.
Mr. Rollins has a great gift; Utilizing his narrative talent, he combines scientific fact, history, and adventure into amazing stories.
His books are like a combination of Indiana Jones, Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, and Clive Cussler...on steroids!

Once I get in to the meat of the adventure, I cannot put it down.
While the characters may not be the most three-dimensional, they all work!

I loved the concept behind this first Sigma Force Novel.
Buried forbidden cites, evil coalitions, potential catastrophic cataclysmic events, religious history..it really DOES NOT get any better than this!

Outstanding Text and Reference not for typical beginners

Howell's book has been around now for 6 editions - you simply do not get to that stage of publishing a technical book without doing many things very well. I have taught advanced statistics to graduate students and professionals in a variety of programs and settings for over 20 years, and

for an advanced basic course in statistics for graduate students or for knowledgeable professionals, I would not teach from any other text for this level of statistics. If graduate students understood most of the content of this text, they would be better equiped researchers than most currently are for sure. It is true that if this book were to be your first treatment of statistics or if your first course was really not all that thorough or was a long time ago, this text might be difficult for you - but not because the text is poorly done. I also refer this text to graduate students, new Ph.D.s, experienced Ph.D.s who are not statistical experts, and other researchers as a desk reference, and I keep it on my desk and keep a copy in my research lab for my research assistants. Graduate students have always consistently strongly praised the book at the end of the semesters when I have used it. Frankly, I suspect other reviewers of this book who give it low marks have ulterior motives such as steering folks to other specific texts. In this veign, I do not personally know the author, but the author David Howell is a highly respected psychologist with true expertise in statistical methods and who served as chair of his department prior up to his relatively recent retirement at the University of Vermont.

Do not buy this book with the hopes of learning statistics. A much better buy would be Statistical for the Behavioral Sciences by Frederick Gravetter and Larry Wallnau. He gives plenty of examples of researchers or writers who like one method versus another, but very few real examples of what you're doing or why? He does show a very broad knowledge of the origins of statistics, but who's really interested unless you plan on writing a paper on statistics. If you want to understand and learn statistics, buy another book. I am a student and I've seen good and bad. This is the first review I've written, but I felt compelled. The textbook is unnecessarily wordy. He takes 3 paragraphs to say something that could have been clearer in a sentence. This guy even spends a great deal of time on formulas, he admits we're not using anymore. Then why include them in the text. If you purchase this one, be sure to buy another one to supplement it. Unless you already have a pretty good foundation. This textbook is a lot of knowledgeable jargon. The two good things about the text: 1) He includes information about statistical software - a lot of statistic books ignore them. 2)It's not the only statistics book we have to choose from.
