A Wonderful Introduction For Actors and Non-Actors Alike

John Bardon, with the assistance of the players from the Royal Shakespeare Company, presents with great zest and humor not merely the mechanics of speaking the verse of Shakespeare, but the sense of the Style of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Age. The actors demonstrate all of the means by which they have discovered the characters they portray and make their own, and their great fortune in the legacy of the RSC. They have absorbed with passion and insight the very beings of another time. I wish, when I was a young actor, that I had had John Bardon as a teacher of verse drama. It took me years to find anyone who could teach me the basic, uncomplicated approach to verse I found in this book. May I just add, I also saw the London Weekend Television production on which the book is based and it was magical. The book reinforces my memory of the living actors, most of whom are favorites of mine who I have seen in all types of productions. However, it is not necessary to have seen that program to appreciate and learn from the book. Highly, highly recommended.

One of the must-have books for any serious stage actor.

I first read Playing Shakespeare when I was still in high school, and have reread it at least three or four times since then. A definite must-read for any serious stage performer. An eye-opener for anyone struggling with a Shakespearean role or character. Very literary, but easy to get into and understand. You have to read it for yourself! Definitely worth the price.

Useful as a companion to the TV series, NOT useful as a book alone

It's a cardinal sin among book lovers to say "the movie was better," but in this case it's undeniably true. The series "Playing Shakespeare" was magical. To see members of the Royal Shakespeare Company discussing, analyzing, and performing Shakespeare is an eye-opening experience, but there is no way to relate what it's like to experience that type of performance in a book. It was frustrating reading the text the actors performed, genius John Barton's reactions and feedback to the performances, ask them to perform it again, only to see the phrase, "They take the text again."

I feel this book is beneficial as a COMPANION to the video series. It contains a lot of valuable information about performing Shakespeare and it comes in handy as a reference if you've already seen the video series.

The book alone leaves you asking more questions than are answered. After the book says a performer reads a monologue and John Barton says something like, "You can year once again the strong rhythm of the prose..." your find yourself with a distinct feeling of having missed something very special. It does provide important instructions, and Chapter 10 "Exploring a Character: Playing Shylock" is very moving. At the beginning of that chapter, John Barton includes a note that says, "This is the pogram wich probably suffers most from being merely set in print. On television the heart of it lay in the extraordinary contrast between the two Shylocks. I much regret that the printed word cannot capture that, but I have still thought the following text worth including here because of the discussions of the character."

The majority of the book "suffers from being merely set in print," but the information included is worthwhile.

Silver anniversary edition hits gold

The silver anniversary edition is an updated version of the classic work originally published in 1971. How can this still be relevant? Easy: people haven't really changed.

Weinberg did something courageous in his updated text. Instead of whitewashing history, he let his original text stand, unedited, and simply commented on each chapter separately. The approach worked for me, making an already entertaining text a joy to read.

What is all this about? Weinberg writes "This book has only one major purpose--to trigger the beginning of a new field of study: computer programming as a human activity, or, in short, the psychology of computer programming. All other goals are subservient to that one." Indeed there has been much study of computer programming as an art and as a discipline for individuals and for groups. This book may represent the beginning of that noble effort.

Don't be put off by the technology Weinberg occasionally uses within the text. At the time of this book's writing, FORTRAN, PL/1, and APL were in common use and OS/360 was the defacto standard. If echoes of the past bother you, ignore them! Instead, concentrate on Weinberg's main topic: the people who develop software systems. For example, consider the following: "...the average programming manager would prefer that a project be estimated at twelve months and take twelve than the same project be estimated at six months and take nine. This is an area where psychological study could be rewarding, but there are indications from other situations that it is not the mean length of estimated time that annoys people, but, rather, the standard deviation in actual time taken." He got it right then--and it is still right.

The book is well researched and contains many stories. All ring true and some made me laugh out loud. If you don't see a little of yourself in this book, you aren't a computer professional. Buy it, read it, and then leave it on your manager's chair. It will do both of you a world of good.

Condensed, highly quotable software wisdom. 0% redundancy!

What prompted me to buy and read this book was Steve McConnel's recommendation in Code Complete. After reading Psychology from cover to cover, I have become a Weinberg fan!
The book is a true jewel - not deficient, not redundant. Every sentence means a lot, and carries insight and pure wisdom. The book demands your utmost attention. Weinberg speaks with precision, simplicity, grace, and wisdom. I found myself quoting him very often! The anecdotes are memorable and relevant - you'll find yourself narrating them to others!
Things I liked most: The entire section on "Egoless Programming". The first three parts of the book are amazingly relevant, although the book has been written over 25 years back (I didn't even exist back then!)
Things I liked least: The last part "Programming Tools" seems to be the only part that's dated. It may be more meaningful to someoone who has experienced such tools and languages.
Now I look forward to reading Weinberg's other books, including "Becoming a Technical Leader", "The Secrets of Consulting", and the "Quality Software Management" series.

Good info on collaborations, but short on details and dated

This book has a wealth of information on how programmers work when in groups, and is a useful read for both managers and individual contributors alike. Many of the fuzzier, less-quantifiable people issues that affect programmers are covered well.
However, it really suffers in three ways:
- All of the examples and technology details are dated to the point of distraction.
- The typography appears to be photocopies of the original text, and really looks terrible. Couldn't they have reset it?
- Not a lot of concrete advice.

This is a totally worthless "reference" book. Don't waste your money.

I have no idea what the author thought he was doing, but for a book that is supposed to be about movies that were made before or later, it fails woefully.

The list is so selective that he fails to include movies that should have been first in line to be discussed, such as "The Big Sleep."

The insight and correlation which Manish has provided makes it difficult to believe that it is his first block buster book as he has the makings of renound writer. The book is a must read as it helps us to understand the very basics of life and to understand each aspect of our living being much better. Cleaned up from prior versions, not happy about having to buy each individual section

UPDATED REVIEW:
I am happy to say that I was able to pass REG on my most recent attempt. The method that definitely worked for me was to read this book along with the Ninja multiple choice questions along with those from cpareviewforfree.com. The questions had a similar feel to the Ninja MCQ and freecpareview.com compared with those that I saw in the Wiley Test Bank. By primarily using Ninja it allowed me to excel in all but one of the sections (I didn't spend too much time with that one section) as well as score above average in the multiple choice section.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
If you're studying for the CPA and don't want to pay the high cost of the review courses then this is the way to go. Tax law changes to this edition compared with an earlier edition (2013-2014) is minor such as the inclusion of the Section 179 changes for 2015 from 200K to 25K as an example. The biggest changes I've noticed though is in cleaning up misspellings, punctuation errors, and mathematical equations. The 2013-2014 edition was littered with this stuff making it difficult at times to follow along. Having gone through most of the book I can say that it is a lot better, however are some of these things still remain. For example, at the bottom of page 521 they have an example of the minimum amount of gross income needed in order to require a return to be filed, the formula they have states "$6,500 + $4,000 + $1,550 = $11,850"....clearly this math does not work (the $6,500 should be $6,300 for the standard deduction amount). No it's not perfect, however it has been cleaned up a lot.

What is unfortunate IMO is the change of the study guide format. In late 2014 I had purchased the 2013-2014 study guide which was a comprehensive guide for all four sections (FAR, REG, BEC, AUD) of the CPA exam for around $100. Wiley offered a separate workbook for purchase with practice problems from all of the sections for around $200. What I did, and probably most did, was skip on purchasing the work book in favor of purchasing access to the online test bank. Wiley has now done away with that. They no longer sell a comprehensive book for all the sections, instead you have to buy each section individually which comes with the reading and practice problems. Due to that reason I've knocked them down to 3 stars because the book(s) are just 'ok' when you would need to spend $250 for the full set.

Instead of supplementing the Wiley Test Bank with this book I would recommend that you use cpareviewforfree.com and/or Ninja multiple choice problems. It's a cheaper way to go plus the questions are a lot more difficult. I've already sat for REG and in my opinion the multiple choice questions on the Wiley Test Bank, as well as what are in this book, aren't at the level of difficulty that you need to be prepared for the actual exam (I can only speak on REG exclusively for this). The practice questions on cpareviewforfree.com and the Ninja MCQ's are much more difficult and really challenge your understanding of the material. There are even some questions from both of these alternative sources that bring up topics not covered in the Wiley Study Guide.

Great book for CPA exam

I am in love with this book.
I just finished college, work for a CPA, and am on track to testing for my license.
My employer recommended wiley for the exam (he said wiley review books cover about 75% of the exam), and I bought the books to start studying for. I just started reading through the regulation study guide, so I'm only a few chapters through the book, but I like how I can review questions after each topic is covered--this shows whether or not I truly understood the concepts and that I'm able to apply the concepts in simulations.
I would definitely recommend this book to others who study for the exam!!

Pros and Cons

I passed the tests and I studied only the Wiley exam reviews. I thought about switch to Becker on my last REG, but decided to stay since I'm so used to it and already knew the way to navigate through Wiley books after three tests with them.

I bet no one is still buying this...the new exams are here and you need new books. But anyway about this book, people are right that Wiley writes encyclopedia not exam guides : ) Becker is much more handy. It cuts out some content and had focuses, exactly what Wiley needs. Don't expect timely suggestions on what will be more or less tested in the real tests in this book.

Encyclopedia have their own pros and cons. This book itself is very lengthy already, and I thank the writers for not killing me by not making it any longer. But seriously I don't remember seeing any content in real tests beyond Wiley study guide series coverage (in all 4 subjects), which is its pro. And the con is, this book kind of treats all topics equally: sometimes you feel you just don't get enough examples on certain topics but for most times too many of them.

Overall, I do believe study guides should have focuses on certain topics to shield candidates from being overwhelmed. That's why it's called a guide. If you decide to go with this one, make sure you don't exhaust every detail to save time and effort. Learn to let go certain contents and you should be okay.

SHOCK 'EM

A propagandist will use the shock treatment to catch his or her audience's attention. The propagandist will make a rather outrageous, exaggerated or shocking statement as an attention getter. There is a price to pay for using this technique. The propagandist must have the necessary supporting data and sound reasons to back up any shocking opening remark.

I've listed a few examples of hypothetical shocking statements that might be made by partisans of some selected issues:

An Environmentalist: "The human race might not see the turn of the next century."

An Educational Reformer: "America's public schools are pretty good - for a third world nation!"

A Dietitian: "You may be killing your children."

An Opponent of Anti-ballistic missile systems: We're more likely to die from a terrorist bombing than from a missile launched from a rogue nation."

A Sociologist with a Bias Against Extreme Social Stratification:

"Karl Marx might have been right. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer."

A Scientist Concerned About Global Warming: "Pretty soon we'll have to visit our coastal cities from a sight seeing submarine."

An Ultra-feminist: "Who are the most dangerous people in the world? They're fairly easy to spot for they usually wear pants!"

A Doctor Pitted against Health Insurance Companies: "Could we win a war if our generals had to get permission to go ahead with each planned battlefield maneuver? Well doctors are facing similar circumstances today!"

One outstanding example of the shock 'em technique was provided by the antics of the evangelist Aimee Semple Mc Pherson. In the late 1920s, her illustrated sermons became famous. After receiving a traffic ticket for speeding she had an idea for a sermon. One day she called out to her congregation, "Stop! You're under arrest!" Sister Aimee, as she was called, appeared on her temple platform in a police uniform standing by a motorcycle with the sound of police siren's echoing throughout the Temple. She challenged her people to stop before they sped into hell. *

THE SHOTGUN APPROACH

With this technique the propagandist throws at the audience every supporting idea for his or her cause that can be thought up. The hope is that at least some of the ideas will be accepted. The more varied and heterogeneous the audience is, the better the chances to get ideas across. If the propagandist is scared to base his or her case on just one main point, this approach is a wise one.

EMPHASIZE ONE POINT

With this technique the propagandist selects what he or she feels is the strongest argument supporting the position being taken on a subject. All other supporting arguments are excluded. It can be risky because if the opponent shoots down the propagandist's main idea the contest is over.

Abraham Lincoln debated using this approach. He was seriously opposed to slavery and in his speeches he hammered away at the problem relentlessly. The slave holding states didn't like him one bit but the free states certainly did and elected him to the presidency.

Henry T. Conserva has taught in public secondary schools in the San Francisco Bay Area of California for over fifty years. In his position as a debating coach, he was involved in developing critical thinking skills among his students. He thought knowledge of propaganda techniques was essential in arming his students against the many questionable arguments they often faced in their debates. He noted that many of the students became skeptical consumers as they saw through many of the advertising appeals that were aimed at them on a daily basis. His hope has always been that all students would benefit from knowing at least some of the ways used by those who wish to brainwash them.

there are better books on the subject

This is very basic and simplistic text. It could be useful, but there are much better books on the subject. This one seems rather disorganized and poorly explained. I would agree with one reviewer that this looks like a Word document turned into a book. I would add that the whole project looks like a rush job without much planning and thought. As the other reviewer I would also recommend an excellent book by Pratkanis and Aronson The Age of Propaganda. Similar price, but much better and much more sophisticated. Further, if one is interested in logical fallacies, there is this old classic by Nicholas Capaldi The Art of Deception. Finally, you could consider "Politics and Propaganda: Weapons of Mass Seduction" (this one is a bit more difficult).

Informative, but designed for high school

I have been interested in propaganda and persuasion for some time now, so when I learned about this book I was very excited. The text itself is a brief overview of 88 or so propaganda techniques. Each is described in about 3 lines, and include an example. The explanations are clear, but not in depth. The work is suitable for someone seeking an encyclopedia-style knowledge.

The formatting appears to be a Word Document that has been put straight to press, untouched.

All in all, if you're looking for a succinct crash course, this may work. If you're truly looking for information, look to Age of Propaganda.
